The Egg Nebula and Minkowski's Buterly new
      #2604580 - 08/26/08 11:25 AM

I tried these last night from my light polluted back yard. I found the egg to be rather easy but like in dark skies the butterfly remains elusive. The reason I even tried here when I couldn't find it in dark skies was that I had a better idea of it's EXACT location here by using google sky. My question is is how much more difficult is the butterfly than the not so difficult egg? Thanks

I've found the "Egg" with my 6" dob and know of someone who has found it with a 4" refractor. I wouldn't consider doing this with the "Butterfly". Then again I just might try if I get around to it.

From one of my observing locations with a SQM reading of 21+ I didn't find the "Butterfly" overly difficult. I was only using the chart provided with the recent Sue French S&T article. When looking for it think long, thin edge on galaxy. That's the difficulty factor.

Here's a sketch I did recently using an f/5 25" Eq mounted newtonian.

I am about to step into the big dob world with my 16" and I love the hard to find objects. Where is Minkowski's butterfly? Do any of you have a map?

You need a good field map as it's not an obvious object.

Here's a link to the Messier45.com page for this object: Minkowski's Butterfly.

Messier45.com is a great online resource for amateur astonomers. If you don't have access to charts or astro software to create charts, you should bookmark that site.
