Though I am not Muslim, I always enjoy looking for the new moon that begins Ramadan--I like the feeling of observing and looking as always, but also knowing that on this one occasion each year by doing so I am honoring something important to millions around the world.
Geometry made last night a no-hope night for seeing the new moon this far up in the Northern Hemisphere, but tonight at 8:00PM ET I was treated to a lovely fingernail crescent moon handing in the sunset right above the horizon, with Mercury one binocular field to the NW and Venus blazing a little less than one more field further on. With the naked eye I could see the crescent and Venus easily and sometimes catch just a glimmer of Mercury with averted vision.
A lovely sight on a summer night. A blessed Ramadan to those who observe it.
