Two shadows of Galilean satellites will be simultaneously transiting Jupiter during the evening of September 7th in North America and the early morning of September 8th in Europe. Io (#1) itself will be in transit along with its shadow and that of Callisto (#4). I calculate that the period in which both shadows are fully on Jupiter’s disk will only last two minutes from 00:13:28 UT to 00:15:28 UT. In Chicagoland this will occur around sunset, but Jupiter will be above the horizon. Observers to the east will see the dual shadow transits at nighttime and those to the west in daylight.

Tonight happened to be our club's Urban Starfest in Central Park (See www.aaa.org), so we had several scopes on Jupiter all night. Unlike the triple-event of Aug 4/5, I had less luck tonight. I was too late for the Callisto shadow. Poor seeing allowed me to see the Io shadow less than half the time. And I could not make out Io itself until it appeared as a bulge on the edge of Jupiter.
On the positive side, I did get to share the view with well over 100 people.

I unfortunately missed these as well. I tried before sunset on the 7th with no luck, and again last night, but I think it was too late. The moon was gorgeous though.
