While observing Scorpio's "stinger" area with 10x50 binos, I noticed a nice grouping of five 7th mag. stars that seemed to resemble a hockey stick standing up against a wall. Does anyone have a better name for it? Here are the details on the object in question:
R.A 17h 25m Dec. -34 degrees 30' Located on the SE edge of the nebula 6357, 3 degrees NW of Lambda Scor. 40' size (lengthwise and oriented N/S) 7th mag.
So far I have had suggestions including a stocking or musical note when observed upside-down in a scope.
If I was a little pompous, I would name it "Mr Q's Lost Sock" since I do loose one now and then (is this where they end up?).
What would you name it?

It can't be too far away...I can smell it unless there's a dead mouse inside one of my walls

The emission nebula NGC6357, the The War and Peace Nebula, lies at the north end of this little line of stars, thus I have always called this asterism "The Road to War" and used it as an alignment aid when photographing this nebula, one of my favorites...

Nice picture Andrew! Was wondering what its visual magnitude is? My NGC database does not list either a visual or surface brightness magnitude. Any guesses? Mr Q

It is pretty dim, only the bright knot at the center is generally visible in the 'scope. No magnitudes given in my references either. I understand the nebula is heavily reddened by galactic dust, so the green O-III we could otherwise enjoy visually is weak. The photo is a stack of ten five minute images through a H alpha filter, the red comes through better. Not bad for a shot from my driveway.

As an update to the asterism in question, I submitted the info to the Deep Sky Hunters group and nothing about this star group appears on their database. Perhaps it was named a long time ago? At least in modern times it has not so I'm calling it "Mr Q's Lost Sock" until I can verify it has not been named before (as the DSH group suggested I do).
Does anyone out there have an old (historic?)list of asterisms with the coordinates I posted at the start of this thread? If so, could you let me know if this object is listed?
If indeed this turns out to be Mr Q's Lost Sock, my next problem is trying to get it back . Until then, I'm keeping my toes crossed for the Lost Sock to become a new asterism.
