I recently purchased a very challenged Nexstar 8 GPS Fastar-compatible scope and sent it off to Celestron for repair. They were able to fix everything except for the broken dovetail on the side of the OTA. Apparently they no longer manufacture that type of dovetail, nor do they have any left. They recommended having a replacement dovetail made for it.
So this brings me to two issues: 1. Is there anyone out there who has de-forked their 8" OTA and has a spare lying around for purchase?
2. In an effort to bring the intact dovetail to a local machine shop I find that I am having difficulty removing the dovetail from the fork arm. I can open the fork to get to the screw, but I am very hesitant to remove the worm and gear for fear of breaking or destroying it. Does anyone have specific directions on how to remove the dovetail from the fork arm?
