The Dark Moon will be in geocentric longitudinal conjunction with the Sun on 2008 AUG 30 at 19:58 UT (14:58 CDT). The first opportunity for North Americans will come on September 1, Labor Day. Venus, Mercury and Mars will serve as guides. Here in the months surrounding the autumnal equinox, young Moon spotting can be difficult for northern observers as the twilight ecliptic has tilted toward an unfavorable position. I’ve created a graphic previewing the western sky as viewed from Chicagoland 25 minutes after sunset on September 1, although it should well serve most North Americans. The Moon will be visible about 8° to the lower left of Venus, about 4° to the lower left of Mercury, and about 6° beneath Mars. I saw it about 6pm local (MST) time on September 1. That's 01:00 UT 9/2/08. Congrats on spotting the young Moon.
