December 5th... new
      #2620817 - 09/03/08 08:58 AM

... Mars reaches conjunction, and the 2007/2008 season ends.
That means, on Dec. 6th, the 2009/2010 Mars season officially begins!
Can you feel the excitement starting to build?

Yay!

This opposition is going to seem pretty blah after the close ones of the last few seasons... but I'll still be watching.

Yea, 2003 was really good.

They're all good!
The worst opposition of Mars is better than the best opposition of any other planet. (I just made that up).

Heh - yeah, like I said, I won't pass it up. We will have to work closer around the opposition date, not like 03 and 05 when I started meaningful observations weeks ahead of time.

It'll be bigger than 6" in diameter from 9/2009 through 6/2010, and > 10" from early December 09 through late March '10. Plenty of time. You need at least a whole month to see it all.
The best part (for me) is: I get to retire during this one!

>10" is sort of my benchmark, and Dec through March is a longer stretch of time than I would have guessed. Plus I like the fact that in the winter it will be higher in the sky for the N hemisphere, and my backyard won't be so hot.

Congrats on your impending retirement, Rick!

Thanks! It's a weird feeling; I've never not worked before. I hope I can handle it! (But by George, I'll give it hell!)

BTW, here's the link to Jeff Beish's ubiquitous apparition highlights article.
