Atlas HC connector?
      #2621675 - 09/03/08 03:16 PM

I can't stand the connector that mates the HC cable to the mount itself. It sticks way out and is not very solid.
Has anyone gone through a retrofit to install a different connector? Of course this will mean re-wiring a bit.
Thanks,
Rob

I just got a right angle serial connector.

My cord now hangs down and I have zero problems.

I ordered the same connector by the same company (L-Com) but it's facing the other way. So it's useless.

Is it a molded connector or a plastic shell? If it's a shell I'd bet it's reversible.

I'm sorry to hear this. You got the wrong part number. They make these angle connectors to face either direction. I'll try to dig up the proper part number and edit this post.

Ron

EDIT - The correct part number is DG909MF2 from L-com. And even when you get this piece, you will have to change the screws and studs around. No big deal, they can go either way. You will understand when you see the connector.

Hope this helps.

Nice. How many actual connection pins are required? I was thinking of looking for a different (smaller) style connector entirely.

The connector on the Atlas mount is a nine pin female serial connector and the connector to the Synta hand paddle is an eight pin phone/Ethernet plug. I do not know how many pins are actually used.

I went though the Mouser catalog, but didn't find anything that would improve these connections. Hope you have better luck.

Hmmm ... I wonder if it uses all the pins. Time for some research.

You know, I wrote a review of the original EQ6 "SkySkan" about two years ago and blasted them for the use of this kind of connector. I couldn't understand why when everyone else in the industry came out with RJ connectors, they went with mid 20th Century interface! Can't BELIEVE that they didn't change this on later mounts..

I REALLY like Ron's solution. Had I not sold mine a long time ago, I was going to convert it to RJ jacks. Ron's is just as good... Slim and not likely to get badly smashed.
