How about some shock cord where the other truss poles would have gone?

Sure do!

Get some hoops at the local hobby store that will fit around the outside of your poles. Buy some stretchy black material at the local fabric store that will fully cover the space from mirror box to UTA. Make a tube out of the fabric that is 1/2 - 1" smaller than the hoops. Arrange the hoops inside the fabric tube that equidistant from each other along the fabric tube you just made (I planned to use 5 hoops) and sew a loop around the hoop through the fabric to keep them in place. This will collapse very nicely and if you sew velcro straps on the ends you can secure it any way you want to.

This is the TomL shroud for 3-pole ultralites, specifically design for "Endurance".

You don't even need hoops. An inch-wide length of formica (maybe 2-ply) may hold its shape well enough when curled into a circle. - j

Gone, but with lessons learned:

Facts are stubborn things.

Thin fiberglass poles from a kite shop also work as hoops.

Do you actually need a shroud?

If the scope is designed such that the mirror box and secondary cage are well baffled, it may be that no shroud is necessary.

I remember a conversation many years ago with Dave Kriege when he commented that the main reason he initially put shrouds on scopes was to keep the dirt from people's shoes from getting on the mirror as they climbed up the observing ladder.

He continued making shrouds on smaller telescopes because people "expected" them.

I've worked with two-strut scopes for years in dewey Ohio and have never suffered and dewing of the primary or noticeable ambient light (or splash marks on the primary caused by drops of water dripping off the inside of the shroud).
