You can't have too many Chondrules new
      #2612186 - 08/29/08 04:03 PM Attachment (7 downloads)

Hi all,

Like most who collect meteorites, a slice packed with chondrules really gets the old ticker a' pounding.

So I thought maybe a few pics of sliced sphere-laden space rocks would be a worthy topic for a post. Here are some of my favorite chondrites in my collection beginning with one I still cannot believe anytime I pull it out to look at.

Krymka, Ukraine
LL3.1

Beautiful specimens Martin!

I had a beautiful CV3 chondrite that was loaded with chondrules, but I cannot recall what NWA number it was. I bought it from Norbert in Australia several months back, and I ended up reselling it. I'll see if I can dig up a photo of it, it was truly a striking specimen. Very colorful with a reddish-orange matrix and many multicolored chondrules.

I currently have a nice UNWA endcut, about 100 grams, with a green matrix that is loaded with chondrules and metal flecks. It's hard to see the chondrules in this photo because I was tilting it in the light to show the metal flecks. I don't think I have a better photo of it right now, so I'll try to post one later tonight....assuming I don't get too sidetracked with evacuation preparations. (Hurricane Gustav)

Thanks for sharing your photos! They are becoming a highlight of visiting this forum.

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG

Wow, those are beauts! I noticed that they are all "L" or "LL" class chondrites. Are those typically more chondrule rich or are these just a coincidental grouping?

Hey Martin, it that you? I should have known by your handle and beautiful pictures.

I have been out of meteorites for many, many months with some major medical issues. Still going through so much. Five surgeries so far this summer. I don't get a chance very much to log on here at cloudy nights or read meteorite central email much but I am happy to see your presence here.

Folks, or those of you who do not know yet, the knowledge, enthusiasm, sensibility and goodwill which Martin brings to the CN community cannot be measured.

Take care my friend.

Hi Walter!

I just caught your post in the I caught a falling meteorite in my backyard! thread. It made me smile to see your name again.

I was shocked to hear about your accident especially since we used to exchange notes about our daughters since they were born(?).

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you.

Sincerely,

Martin

Hi molniyabeer,

Great question. I'll take a stab at it.

What makes chondrites look chondrule rich is 1) plenty of chondrules to see, and 2) less competing matrix and similar colors. So of the ordinary chondrites, the LL chondrites have the lowest bulk iron (free and in compounds), the lowest overall metal, and are the most oxidized, they generally express chondrules the best.

But there are some pretty amazing H3s out there, but nothing I've seen compares to an LL when it comes to ordinary chondrites. There are some amazing E, C and R chondrites as well that will knock your socks off.

Here is a pic of my slice of Renazzo, the namesake of the CR carbonaceous chondrites. Renazzo is classified as a CR2 and fell January 15, 1824.

The Chrondules are breath-taking to say the least.I know you probably get tired of hearing it, but you post some of the best images I have ever seen.

Your collection must be Amazing.

zagami,

Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense. And you're right, there are some other nifty oddballs out there. I have small pieces of a CV3 and R-type chondrites that are quite pretty, too.

Hi Martin,

I just acquired a slice of NWA 5206 - an LL3.05. It is inbound to me now - so I'll post a picture of that when it arrives. It will be tough to compare to the samples you have posted - you have some simply amazing pieces......
