Hi folks, I wanted to give you an update about Rich Handy (Kraterkid). I spoke with him a couple weeks ago, and he has been out of touch for the last couple months due to a hard drive crash on his laptop. The repair process has been very slow. Reconstruction on his home is proceeding, however once it's done, he will likely need to sell and find a smaller, more affordable home to keep pace with the changing circumstances he is dealing with.
He does try to check in at the library computer from time to time, but the 1 hour limit on the computers keeps his communications limited to essential business (he noted that he's a hunt & peck typer so he hasn't been able to fit in all the replies that he would like to : ). He said that he misses the camaraderie here at CloudyNights and that the well-wishes mean a lot to him. He wanted to extend a special thanks to Erika and all who helped with a care package a few months ago.
When he gets his computer back up and running, I'm sure he'll have a lot to say. Until then, we're pulling for you, Rich.

Jeremy...why don't we send him some sketch copies and some things to make him smile. He could probably use the uplift.

Thanks for the update on Rich. I originally accidentally found his whole moon sketches and brought the old thread up again into the current sketching forum when Erika responded to my questions about Rich's artwork.
I am glad to hear he is OK. It sounds rather ironic that he has suffered nearly all the same maladies that I have. I lost my home and as it was also my art studio that I designed 20 years ago, in foreclosure 10 months ago. Also, I do not have my home computer. Everything is in storage and I have been in a poverty situation for 10 months now, staying with friends. All of my recent pastels have been produced when weather allows me to sit outside in a not so congenial area of town. I had been under dark skies on the edge of Portland in my yard for over 20 years. I am now under city light pollution. I cannot afford much in art materials for the past several months.
The bank and the attorneys have just announced to me that I will receive a large sum in return to my home loss. I plan to travel cross country and connect with many who have seen my art. Hoping to do some lectures and provide sidewalk astronomy with several telescopes, including an h-alpha for solar as I did in the news for the public and schools 8 years ago on a 10,000 mile solo road trip in one months time. Currently to complicate matters, I tore a shoulder muscle on the job and haven't slept more than 3-4 hours per night for the past month.
I look forward to hearing from Rich again as I would like to see some correspondence about his lunar sketches.

I was just about to start asking around to see how Rich was doing. Thanks for the update. While it's depressing to hear that the hits keep coming, it's also a relief to hear that he is making some progress. Perhaps there's a bit of light at the end of the tunnel.

Glad to hear Rich is doing as well as can be expected.
If you could have Rich get in contact with me, I will see to it his computer is either repaired or replaced...I'll pick up the tab.

A few folks have asked how to reach Rich. He needed to move from the rental house he had at the beginning of September, so yesterday and this morning I tried to contact him to check on the best mailing address. Unfortunately, it appears his cell phone number is no longer working. I will PM those who are trying to contact him with a couple other potential ways to reach him. Hopefully before too long we'll find his new point of communication.

What about his email addresses Jeremy? I have two of them and I believe at least one of them he could reach online, if not the other one as well. Of course, I'm sure you probably have the same ones I do.

Rich is always in our hearts as he recovers from personal tragedy. The loss of a home is an incredible loss. I pray that he is able to get his life back as soon as possible. Please keep us updated on how he is doing.

Hi all,
Roland's idea of sending Rich some good cheer sketches sounds very good to me. Roland noted that he would be happy to send a batch to him; however, he would need to do it before he and Linda leave for Uganda in less than two weeks.
At this point any mail would need to go to the home he lost to the fire, and hopefully he will still be collecting mail there for a little while yet. If anyone has something they would like to send via Roland and Linda, please send them a private message. If you would like to send directly to Rich, let me know and I'll forward you Rich's mailing address.
I wish I could help coordinate something further, but I'm unable to for the time being.
Thanks, Jeremy

Hello to all,
I just exchanged e-mails with Rich and he will be back with us soon. When the contractors finish the floors in two rooms he will be able to unpack and get settled back into his home. This is very encouraging good news indeed.

Thanks for the great news about Rich. Ironic that I too have been on a disconnect as I ponder my return trip to Portland today from Toronto and to look to rebuild a home again soon.
I will look forward to hearing from Rich and seeing his messages again in CN.
