The EC does not have the Autostar and the PE comes with Autostar and LNT.
The ETX requires 1.25 inch eyepieces.
Here's a good buy..
ETX-125EC with Autostar $475

The PE is the latest model with auto level and point north. The AT doesn't have LNT so you have to level and point it north by hand. The EC don't have UHTC coatings, I thought it had autostar (but maybe with less objects).
The only problem with the latest model is people break the red dot view finder easily. There older models watch out for overtightening and broken clutches. If you see any cracks in the arms leave it.
Takes 1.25" eyepieces if they are that wide then yes you can use them.

Looks like ~ $890 US. Current street price for the ETX-125PE with the LNT, tripod, 497 and 26mm is ~ $900 US. This would be without the extra eyepieces and barlow. The 4 and 6 mm eyepieces would have limited use with the 125 as the magnification would be extreme. The 9.7mm could still aproach/exceed the useful magnification limit. It all depends upon if you want the LNT which eases setup. Other than that a the ETX-125EC with the 497 and UHTC has the same specifications as the ETX-125PE.

Midnightblue,
Try these people. From Mike Weasner's site (you need to get familiar with this site if you are getting a ETX) they are recommended as a responsible vendor in Britain. The link to the ETX125PE w/Meade 4000 eyepiece kit is here!

Bump.
I am replacing an ETX90 EC with UHTC with a 125.
is the PE that much of an upgrade?
I can get the 90 setup and aligned in less than 2 min.
I am not sure I could tell the diff between the UHTC and Not on the 90's I had though.
How much does the clock and TLN help?

That's about it, yep. I think most folks manage to work this out for themselves pretty quickly
With the PE version, Meade are just trying to make the thing even more idiot proof to the extent that they are marketing it at people who can't tell the time and don't know which direction north is. Makes you wonder what 'features' will be coming up next; maybe you won't even have to look through the thing anymore, it will just project an image of what you should be seeing on a computer screen, or your TV so you don't have to be inconvenienced by going outside... Oh, wait, we have that already...
I live in the southern hemisphere so LNT was of no use to me anyway (I have the AT version which I actually paid extra to get instead of a PE model). I still manage excellent alignments and GOTOs just by eyeballing north (no Polaris to sight on down here). It really ain't that critical. And from everything I've heard, the red dot finder is borderline at best. I get by very well with my right angle finder too.

The difference is definitely visible in UHTC/non-UHTC 125s.
I vote for the PE, which is what I have. The improvements are pretty worthwhile IMHO:
--Red dot finder insteade of the former (and lousy) tiny optical finder.
--The LNT module (red dot finder) also keeps time and date so you don't have to re-enter them each time.
--With the LNT, the ETX is like a GPS without a GPS: turn it on, and, if you have not changed your geographic position, the scope gets date and time from the LNT, points north, levels itself, and heads for the first alignment star. Finer than split frog hair in this old boy's opinion.
--The LNT system also makes Home Position easier. No pointing north, etc. Just move the scope counterclockwise in azimuth to its hard stop and lock it down.
What can I say? I love my 125PE: http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=1807

I didn't think I'd get that much out of the LNT and originally considered it a bit of a gimick, but after using it for a while I really like it; much easier than the old two-star alignment, which itself wasn't that big a deal. But with LNT you just set it up, turn it on, let it do its dance (go inside and grab my chair and table while it's doing its thing), center a couple of stars, and you're good to go. I bought my ETX-125PE as an all-visual companion to my imaging rig, and it has served in that role wonderfully well, the best investment I've made in a long time.
