Rob looks great, but get the poor guy holding the shaft for the pic to wash his hand before the next pic...
It takes away from the fine machine work...

Yes I can see that...but my cousin NEVER washes his hands cuz he lives in the shop. Retired you know....
Dirty hands is the result of hard work with Steel and grease.

Yeah...we could not chuck up that 20" tank in anything less.
That became his when his father died...and it was given to him. My cuz has three lathes.

OK.
We had to remove the tank from the lathe to sand blast the surface free of that nasty paint and prepare it for welding.
Here is an image of the roller rings welded on the tank.

And one with both rings welded on.
We had to come up with some pretty nifty ideas to do this.
First..we clamped a stock piece of rolled rod to the large chuck(It so happends to be exactly 20"). we then turned the lathe on slow and allowed the bar to Roll through the lathe. It nicely rolled the bar into a curve.
We then destressed it by hammering it around the chuck plate. Once the rings were formed we welded the first using the machined weld at the bottom of the tank as a guide.
Once the forst ring was welded on we made a guage that slipped over the first and held the second. We applied a folcrum to hold the ring down snug against the tank and at the exact distance.
After all was done we turned on the lathe to check for trueness of both rings. Man nearly spot on, and that is before the tank is sectioned and each piece is rechucked and machined for trueness.
We were very happy with ourselves.

Here is a closeup of one of the rings tacked welded.
We will finish the welds in on both sides latter this weekend and then section the tank.
After each ring is removed it will be sand blasted(inside-n-out) and remachined.

One last one of this pretty nifty lathe we were using to make the drive shaft system on.
This lathe is WW2 vintage..American made..precision.

OK a bit more pix of my OTA project.
After finish spot welding the roller rings we had to true them up. Here is an image of the first ring getting some lathe time.

We then set up for scoring the tank and begin cutting in the bands. We will cut almost through, then finish cut them with the tank removed from the lathe

This pic shows the scoring being done to the tank at each ring section. before the OTA is removed from the lathe for actual sectioning of the rings.
Once done..each ring will be replaced back on the lathe for truing. Once we have the actual OTA dimensions we will then begin to fashion the fork and its drive around it.
The OTA cradles will be the items that will dictate the over-all fork width. With the cradle bearings being spring loaded and then secured to the OTA and fastened down...we can begin making the DEC acis bearings and shaft.
Rob(During all this I am also making my 10"f/16 refractor too.......man what a full plate)

Of course. That will go where the old red roof shed is.
It has a partial cement floor. I will excavate to the south. I have to avoid the buried power line to the well and the water line that feeds the sprinkler system that is just off to the west. I'm looking at say a 11x16 roll off structure.
Great thing about this is...I have all the time in the world to accomplish it. I also have several leads on several 11"x13ft tubes. I might even go with a stainless tube. Sure it's heavier...but it is cheeper and I don't care about the weight.

Yeah Rob, you should go with the stainless tube. My 60mm f17 is using a polished stainless steel tube too. Very slick.

The gentleman who is looking for me said he has several sizes of stainless.....he and his partner will be on the lookout for the size I need. He said it would be easier to find then the aluminum.

Well cutting this 3/16" x 20" tank is a lot haarder then I had originally thought.
We got it sectioned and are now sectioning the bands/rings that will form the tattice OTA.
We have to get this OTA cut...layed out and build before we can procede with the fork.
Here are some pix of this afternoons work.
Cutting off the rings.

Most of the tank has been removed and we are now cutting the remainder rings for the OTA.
Man what a job.
Still have to retool and relathe up the body of the OTA and turn it true.
Next week I supose.
