Hi folks. This is my first post (actually a question). But first of all, I'd like to say that I've been lurking for a while and this a great resource for newbies like me - so thanks to all of you in advance!
I'm considering a used LXD55 SN6, and I'm curious as to what the difference is between the tripods for that and the SN8, if any? If I look at the manual downloaded from Meade, the SN6 tripod weighs in at 35 lbs and the SN8 weighs 10 more lbs at 45. Is the difference in the construction of the GEM or is it the tripod itself? The text of the manual doesn't imply any other difference, and all the accessories listed are the same.
I'm planning on eventually getting a regular 8" newt for the SN6, and I don't want to get this scope if the mount is significantly different, or won't handle it.
Thanks for your help. Jim R.

Jim,
Your making a good choice. The weight difference you see listed is not between the tripods but the overall weight of the complete setup. That 10 lb difference is due to the size differences between the 2 scopes.
A real good resource(besides here Lol ) for anything on the 55 series can be found At LXD55.Com

Also the difference in weight is with an 8" you need an extra counter weight. I have a regular 8" Newtonian on the LXD75 mount, which is the later model mount and works fine.
I have an extra counterweight so have 2 instead of one. If you check the galleries on this website and look for denodan you will see my setup. I used to have the 6" newtonian on the LXD75 mount and sold the 6" but kept the mount.
