NGC 7000 is catalogued among the bright nebulae. Nevertheless the nebula can appear very elusive. Many observers have failed to see NGC 7000 at all. The nebula measures 3°x2.5°. Therefore a low power instrument (preferable lower than x30) and dark skies are mandatory to observe NGC 7000. I have observed the nebula with a 100mm refractor at x16 with a UHC filter under mag 5.5 skies. I failed to see it with a pair of 8x56 bino’s under mag 5.7 skies, but succeeded under mag 6.3 skies. The nebula itself stays very dim. But it appears to be bordered with dark dust clouds. Thanks to these dust clouds, NGC 7000 stands out against the background, if the field of view is large enough.
The North America Nebula can be found just E of Deneb. Try to put Deneb at the W border of a low power binocular. Then look for the bright Xi Cygni in the eastern half of the field. I always try to locate the ‘little Orion’. It is a small asterism of seven stars W of the Gulf of Mexico. These three references can be your beacons in search of the elusive continent.
A nice surprise is Barnard 353, a conspicuous dust cloud just N of NGC 7000.
When I finished my observation, I tried to see NGC 7000 with my 15x70 bino’s. The nebula appeared to glow a lot brighter, with the open cluster NGC 6997 shining like a brightening on the W half of the continent. NGC 7000 almost filled the whole field of view. And therefore the nebula was hard to see as a whole.
I tried to represent NGC 7000 as an elusive object. You probably will not see it on your monitor if the room is too bright.

Rony,
A truly outstanding observation of this interesting nebula in Cygnus. Many amateurs believe this nebula to be easier to detect after reviewing images of the nebula obtained using wide field instruments attached with cameras. You have rendered it perfectly appearing as a "ghostly" figure floating in space. Thank you for sharing it with us all.
Is there a "Belgium Nebula?"
Carlos

I agree. That is just plain outstanding. I want to try our 8x56s on the same target and the N. Am. neb but we are in a bad sky cycle right now. Nice sketch...and a lot of work on the both the star field and the nebulosity. Roland

Wonderful sketch, Rony, of one of my favorite targets! My instrument of choice for viewing the NA Nebula is my 4/5-inch Orion StarBlast with a 22-mm Panoptic and narrowband nebula filter in place. Great stuff!

Carlos, Roland, Phil, Out of Focus,
I'm glad that you like the sketch.
Carlos, Maybe I should think about a suitable Belgium Nebula!

Rony,
Another breath taking sketch of a great binocular target. I have not been able to trace this one out as nicely as you have done here from an equivalent sky.

Frank,
Thank you very much!
Now did you not mention once that you spent some time on dark nebulae? I guess that that site should display NGC7000 very nicely.
