V1466 Aql - Double Star new
      #2636234 - 09/11/08 01:27 AM Attachment (30 downloads)

A nice double star found in Aquila, V1466 Aql isn't overly spectacular in regards to contrasting colors or possessing any other sort of "WOW" factor, but its secondary star is quite faint compared to the primary. I would consider this a good "semi-challenge" double for splitting for those just starting out observing doubles.

NOTE: I am not 100 percent positive that I have identified the correct name of this double. After checking Cartes du Ciel, this is the double star I sketched, but checking the name/info against SIMBAD describes V1466 Aql as a Variable Star.

Wade,

Excellent sketch. Very nice target choice. Close pairs of stars of unequal brightness always stop me as I am sweeping to a target.

Wade,

An excellent observation of an interesting double star in Aquila. The primary star measures 6.5 magnitude and the fainter component at 10.5 ( a magnitude difference of 4). The two stars are separated by 13.5 arc-seconds. A variable star database ( http://www.alcyone.de/SIT/bsc/HR7572.html ) lists it as a variable star as well with a variation of 0.6 magnitude (6.50 to 6.56). V1466 was discovered by the famous German-Russian astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve (aka Wilhelm Struve, 1793-1864) using the Dorpat Refractor (9.5 inches (24 cm)). Thank you for sharing this with us all. The image below courtesy of Starry Night Pro.

Wade,

A beautiful sketch of a careful study!

The difference in brightness is striking in your sketch.

Very good, Wade. I will look for this, too. I had not noticed it. Roland
