Mountain Moon

Sometimes we set things up in hopes for a little hole in the sky. No holes this time, but nice site in the sky while we were in a campground full of the bustle of families, campfires, woodsmoke, and a gentle breeze.

Roland,

There is something about this sketch/drawing that I really, really enjoy. You have managed to capture a certain "mood" or ambiance that is quite exquisite.

Very nice indeed!

Roland,

Very nice sketch. I agree with the words of Wade. It looks like you mixed media to achieve your results. Charcoal and pastel pencils?

Frank

Thanks Frank and Wade. Outlined the circle with grey pencil; used pencils to do a rough moon with "seas" except a charcoal (fat) pencil to get them a little darker; then pastel white (another fat pencil pastel) to outline the rest of the moon areas; then overlaid with pastels (first the black around the moon to darken the sky then whites and blacks and yellows to get the net effect as the clouds increased; last step: smoothed the areas over and around the moon to show the muted and diffuse light effects from the bright moon light.

I don't know whether this right or not...I sort of figure what was there first (a mostly clear moon) should be laid down first before proceeding to what was there last (the clouds then the trees closest to me). Guess it is a little more work that way, but it seems to work. I'm open to suggestion if I can do things a better way.

I also don't know when to use charcoals or pastels but the charcoal comes in a fat pencil so I can handle it better. Like I said, I use a white pastel pencil for the same reasons.

Roland

Thanks Rony. Could be in a dream, I suppose, but it really looked like this. My texture is a bit rougher than reality. Roland

Roland,

A beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain Moon scene. The Moon appears to float above treetops. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

This takes me back to my childhood in Northern Alabama...fall nights with the full moon glances across the tops of the trees.

Again, great work Roland.
