I'd also be interested in hearing the eyperiences of other SCT & Rukl users and how they find the using the maps at the eyepiece?? many thanks
Welcome aboard!
For the most part, I don't use a diagonal with my SCT unless the Moon is high and viewing w/o one would be impossible [mine is on a fork-mount].
When not using the diagonal on an SCT, the view is upside down and reversed, so all you need to do is turn Rukl's upside-down and it will match your eyepiece view.
When using a diagonal though, the eyepiece view is merely mirror-imaged with north remaining at the top. If you find this disorienting, there's a fix. Since I've never been good at mental gymnastics, I scanned all of the drawings, reversed them left/right, and printed them to use with the diagonal. Works like a charm.

I have enjoyed the Photographic Moon Book by Alan Chu. It was promoted as a new product in an old issue of S&T that I was browsing in December. It is either a downloadable PDF older edition or Alan will mail you the latest edition on CD for $3. That's a bargain when you compare it to atlas prices. After reading the threads in the Lunie Bin, I have just ordered Sky Publishing's Moon Book package that has both Rukl's Atlas and Charles Woods' book. Looking forward to using both of them.
Now, all I need is a telescope. Will probably go with an Orion XT10 after I get to a few more Star Parties to check out the different scopes.

Hi Anthony, and welcome!
Those are four good choices - Rukl, Wood, Orion, and seeing scopes for real at a star party.

Welcome, Anthony!
I doubt you'll be dissappointed with the set from Sky Publishing. They are my most treasured books so far with astronomy. Enjoy!

Hi Anthony, and welcome! One thing you might want to order with the scope is a Moon filter. Lady Luna can be quite brilliant at times.

Is this the same Rukl Atlas that was selling on ebay and CN a few weeks ago for over $100.00? Sky is selling the latest version for $45.00 in the link supplied at the beginning of the post. I ordered the Rukl so I guess I must cast my unbeknownin' vote in that direction. Found myself totally unprepared while trying to follow another lunie thread with a 1977 Norton Star Atlas Moon chart. Norton's must have driven a lot of lunar observers to doing their own sketches. Drove them mad, I say!
Norton produced a horrible Moon chart, and may have created a whole new generation of lunatics.

I Use my Hatfield Atlas, I have highlighted the famous Lunar 100 objects as well an assortment of notes (memories) I joted down to help me remember complex crater formations, and crater hoping, especially in the Southern Highlands. The atlas is oriented for use with a reflector (my favorite scopes).

Do you find the photo atlas easy to use? It takes me long enough to match features in some of the drawn atlases against a photo, let alone the actual Moon.

It took me a while to get accustomed to the format, but once I did I found it very useful. The oft complained about photos in the atlas show a given region of the Moon under various angles of illumination, and one of them almost always at least approximates the view I have that night. I really like that aspect of the atlas. However, I still find myself using Rukl's atlas about 90% of the time.

I ordered the Rukl but in the interim I've been taking digital photos of the moon. The old Norton Moon map, c. 1977 doesn't help but this website does. lunarrepublic
I took some photos last night and the old Norton was bit of a pain to use but the Lunar Republic program shows a lot of promise. May be a good adjunct to the Rukl. As you pass the cursor over a crater the name appears.
The sample they provide is quite good. I got this link from someone's CN post.

I've been using them while writing observing reports to double-check names, spellings, etc. I believe we have the Lunar Republic among the links in the thread stuck to the top of the forum.

I've read his Pictoral Guide to the Moon, but I didn't even know he had an atlas in print. Thanks Robert!
