Since my last post on this thread it has come to this: Rukl's has become the primary source for ID. But I've since taken lunar photos that I've made and oriented them to the Rukl illustrations and labeled the craters and other features. That along with my trusty, and quite inexpensive HP 3740 printer, (the replacement ink cartridge is 2/3rds the value of the printer), has made it easier to ID the various lunar features, especially those that move between existence and non with each lunation.
I've have since come to the conclusion that the Lunar Republic CD is a novelty in the category of the lunar atlas and superfluous.

For those who might find an expensive atlas a bit more than they wish to start out with, you may wish to consider the S&T Field Map of the Moon.

I find that Woods' Modern Moon and Rukl's Atlas compliment each other quite well. I'm also quite fond of the quadrant maps published by UA's LPI. But my favorite is RITI's Lunar Map Pro - I've just upgraded to version 4.

Hi all, I own the anscient version of the Antonin Rukl for Moon Venus and Mars book of 1976. It is a great book about. No photo but an atlas which gives notes about region of what you can see. This actually a guess for observing and point out target given in the atlas. Observers whon owned a 4 to 8" aperture had a basis of an observing program. The Mars and Venus chapters are little in comparison to the Moon chapter but in few you get what is interresting to observe usefully as an amateur in relation with Amateur Groups like Alpo or others among. A great one. It is issued on 1976 I keep still it on my office boards and until now I donot see such comparison for usefull studies. I do not know the new issues but start with the Rukl, hope it is in the same manner. Stanislas. 4" refractor F10 N4GT 6" newtonian F6 reflector home made. 8" Cave newtonian F8, sold.

Here lately I have succumbed to Lunacy and have a desire to take a shot at the AL Lunar 2 club. After checking out the targets the moon suddenly seems interesting especially since the only clear nights lately seem to be when the moon is out and deep sky is out of the question. Thanks for posting your opinions of the atlas available as I am now in the market for one.

To Whom it May Concerne:
I still use Selenographia by Johannes Hevelius, I find it much more accurate and prettier than any of the later atlases...

I voted for Rukl's. I ordered it on Ebay last month and am waiting for it in the mail (its late, so much for the premium shipping I paid).

I bought the set from sky publishing , I love it cause on a cloudy night I can look up a particular area and know what I am looking at then I can go online and print satelite photos and then use them as an ultimate learning tool when I am at the eyepiece it is amazing what you can see after study like this. I also like how mr wood explanes so much in detail.

I like the 'Modern Moon' by Wood however, my favorite Moon book is "Atlas of the Moon" by Antonín Rükl.

The two compliment each other beautifully. Modern Moon is not an atlas at all, but a guide book to what we see in terms of its geological meaning. The Rukl's atlas has few equals, even when compared with various otherwise excellent software options. Owning a copy of each will keep you busy learning about the Moon for a long time.

Here's a very interesting link of downloadable maps: http://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/mapcatalog/ I also have seen someone selling these, printed and on CD ROM on Ebay, searching under lunar atlas. I read this thread through before posting this, but am unsure if these had been mentioned. The LAC maps and LM maps are beautiful! I love S&T's quadrant maps, but I photocopied them in sections and put them all in a binder. Hard to arrange them in some sort of sequence properly, though! It is the best one for me with which to hunt rilles, my personal Lunie Bin Affliction :-) john kanzler

Another nice thing about Modern Moon is that it has alot of pictures. I take it out alot to help me identify features.

Alan Chu's "Photographic Moon Book" will keep an observer busy for a long time and the price is right--free. An excellent guide/atlas which is easily printed out and bound in a loose-leaf binder for scopeside use.
