Owl Astronomy ED-LER? new
      #2647814 - 09/17/08 02:40 PM

Are the Owl Astronomy ED-LER planetary EPs any good? I am particularly interested in the 7.5mm (for use in an 8" F/4.5 dob). Thanks for any help!

I have a few Owl eyepieces and have sold a few. They are OK in general but dont favor much in the way of eye releif in my opine.

I haven't used their ED EP's but have tried their UWA in 11mm and 16mm. Don't bother with them. I have a set of Celestron's X-Cel EP's and these are pretty good. They do Jelly Bean (have black outs) but after you use them a little you get your eye in the right place and never notice that they can do this. From my 25, 21, 20, 18, 12.5 and 8mm pieces are all parfocal, with good eye relief. The Expanse EP's do have better contrast, but also have horrible coma. But I did keep my 6mm Expanse. You won't beat the Naglers with anything else out there, but BIG $$$$ too.

If I might ask, what was wrong with the UWAs and what scope did you use them in?

I have tried my UWA's (Not the UWAN's) in an 8" Celestron f10, a 4" mak f15, and an ETX 60mm f8. All had very little eyerelief. My old Mead MA's are brighter. All my plossl's are clearer, and there was very little difference in precieved area seen compaireed to plossl's of the same focal lengths. ( I have both the 16mm and 11mm UWA's) When an MA gives a more pleasing clearer view than a $45 eyepiece, I can't recomend the $45.00 eyepiece. But I love my Baaders. Only have 1 Nagler, it's great but it's a 9mm. Definitley still has a wider view than the OWL UWA 11mm. Clearer, sharper and being a 9mm more magnification. It costs more too. But even my 8mm Baader has a wider view than the OWL UWA, and still beats it at everything else too. I'm trying to get some more Naglers now as I just ordered an f4.5 scope. Hope the Baaders hold up for now. NOTE: The 16mm & 11mm are 1,25" eyepieces, maybe the 2" eyepieces are better?
