Wrong Time Setting on LX200acf
      #2651481 - 09/19/08 11:48 AM

Last night, the alignment was off on my new LX200acf. I think the problem was that it was setting the time incorrectly on its auto-alignment setup procedure. Doesn't it get this from the GPS satellite. Was the satellite off or my telescope? How do I fix this?

Bob

I believe you still may need to set your time zone. GPS always reports UTC, but if your time zone if off, it might calculate the wrong sidereal time for your area.

Bob...welcome to CN. You'll find really good guys and help here.
With a new scope...you have to CALIBRATE SENSORS. This is found in the SETUP menu of the HBx. Then you AUTOALIGN and let the scope pick the two stars. You should be spot on everytime.
When you get the time...do your DRIVE TRAINING etc as mentioned in your manual (remember...it's your friend).

The built in GPS sets the correct time, zone and daylight savings automatically. The computer computes your co-ords from satellite links and it knows the night sky from there on.

I think your problem would be not aligning properly, not centering your alignment star properly. At this stage, it's patience and reading your manual. That scope will amaze you with what it does and what you can see.

Cheers and clear skies.

Time Zone and Daylight Savings options only affect the DISPLAYED time on the handbox. The GPS signal is Universal (or Greenwich) time (plus/minus some small offset) and all the calculations are based off that.

Next time you are aligned, hit the MODE key and hold it down for 4-5 seconds then release. Then you can scroll through some status screens, inluding local time and UTC (Greenwich) time. UTC is the more important one, currently it is 4 hours ahead of Eastern US (daylight) time.

PS if this scope was brand new out of the box, it thinks it's in Irvine California (Meade HQ) until the GPS overrides it. It is possible you didn't get a GPS fix as it can take a few minutes the first time a GPS is used (or if it is moved a long distance from where its previous fix was) until it gets its bearings again. Subsequent fixes are very quick, I get them in 3 or 4 "*" on the autostar. If you were right next to aluminum siding on your house, or didn't have a clear view of the sky, that will hamper an accurate GPS fix. It doesn't tell you that the GPS signal was not acquired, it just asks for Time and Date (and it is then up to you to enter your observing location - it will default to the previously used one, perhaps Irvine CA!)

Note that the default Site may be changed to Irvine CA if you ever update the autostar firmware.
