Astronomical Sketching- Step by Step by Rich Handy new
      #2650111 - 09/18/08 04:36 PM

To all who sketch or want to

As I saw a post here about Rich Handy accidentally a month ago, I was amazed by his whole moon sketches. Erika Rix filled me in about Rich's background in CN. I see that Roland mentioned Patrick Moore's book on Astronomical Sketching in a post here that Wade started as a tutorial on sketching, so I inquired with the largest book store in the world, that is here in Portland Oregon. Instead they informed me of Rich Handy's new book, c June 2007. I was further pleased that it is endorsed on the cover by Jeremy Perez and Erika Rix.

I am on my way to the book store now to see it. I am anxious and will report more later.

Amazing is an understatement when it comes to the exceptional sketches Rich has created when sketching the Lunar surface; and Erika is among one of the best in regards to solar sketches, IMHO.

Wade and Glen

I hope to see a little more of your thoughts and comments here in this post about the book if you will. When I got to the book store, they could not find the only copy that their inventory department claims is there. They will run a search and call again tomorrow. I was only hoping to see it first as I currently cannot afford to purchase it. Powell’s City of Books claims a total of over 10 million copies here in Portland on its four floors of the downtown store. They also listed a special printing at $38. May I ask, does anyone know what the difference is in this special printing?

I also wanted to commend your tutorial Wade, about encouraging others. I think we owe it to others who are reluctant to at least try to sketch a little and to not be intimidated to try or make mistakes at first as we all did at this in the beginning. As seasoned veterans, I believe that there is a confidence that builds with this process that those who are newcomers have not developed as yet. They must at least start before they can discover the process. I agree wholeheartedly with your encouragement to let others know that we are here first for fun and to enjoy this. I think our society takes precedence in pushing competition though and at times possibly through intimidation; and this needs to be overcome. Although I have sold some works in both art and photography, I do not really claim to be a professional at this. If those who think that you get good enough to do it easily one day as a professional, then there would be no challenge to ever begin. Even an accomplished professional struggles at times.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Rich's biography in his site and that he originally was an art major as I was. He strayed from it instead to earn a living just as I did. His first big influence being a small Golden Press book, The Stars, and how it influenced him as a young child. I too still have the same book that I believe I bought on the local drug store rotating display rounder when in elementary grade school.

There are many similarities in interests that many of us follow from childhood. I believe that those same similarities in desire to be artistic and to discover the universe just eventually catch up with others as adults.

People write to me quite often and ask how I do it. As Erika suggested that I write a tutorial, I will eventually do that. I just need to get over some current obstacles like a recent shoulder injury. I dabbled in crude astronomy sketching from the eyepiece while in early high school. I recently returned to serious work but only when a relative gave me some old antique pastels about 10 years ago. I did not really pick them up to sketch with until I saw a black and white sketch of a solar prominence by Erika Rix and another on the same day by Les Cowley in October 2006. That is what did it for me. It took another 1 ½ years to find you all here in CN as I thought only Spaceweather.com would post my work and once in Astronomy Picture of the Day.

I am now encouraging other acquaintances to see the CN forums.

Mark

The edition for sale through Amazon is the only one I've ever seen. Perhaps one of our resident authors knows something.

Hi Mark,

The Astronomical Sketching book seems to be mainly an online item. I've done web searches for any copies that are physically located at the major book stores, but they all seem to only bring it in when somebody requests it.

As far as a "special printing", that must mean something else to them, or it might be an error. So far, there's only one edition of the book...although there is a 'Kindle' electronic version available at Amazon.com.

There was a discussion about it in Stellar Media here:

Stellar Media: Astronomical Sketching: A Step-by-Step Introduction

Tom wrote a review here:

Review: Astronomical Sketching: A Step-by-Step Introduction

It looks like there are a few used copies at the online sellers that might run about ten dollars less.

I hope some of that helps!

Jeremy

Jeremy

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at the online reviews.

Powell's City of Books called just an hour ago to inform me that they know the new copy is somewhere in their 4 floors of 10 million copies but they cannot currently find it. I asked for another copy to be ordered from their warehouse so that I may see it before buying. I know that I would highly prize this book as I have already seen Rich's posts here, his online site bio and I was utterly stunned and elated at his artistic abilities; also his similar background story ti mine from childhood.

If I receive my settlement from foreclosure soon, I hope to make allot of tracks across the continent on a long road trip. I would thoroughly enjoy to meet Rich and some of the other astronomy artists here if I come close to their locales.

My pursuits will possibly be to search a lecture circuit to advocate this observational astronomy and with cooperative educational institutions, convey the importance of artful sketching related to astronomy to schools students. I feel that it is something that is missing from education today. Especially when I watched with sadness, the Lehrer News Hour last night and how Washington DC has terminated most of its schools teachers. My personal firm belief is that observational astronomy science mated to visual sketching art can save the world.

As you may know from my past posts, I initiated to take John Dobson with me to many schools here in the Portland metro area, allowing him to lecture to students of all ages, then followed up with solar observing though a Dobson Sun Scope and a Coronado h-alpha.

Dobson and I also provided much in night-time sidewalk astronomy in the inner city streets of Portland for a few weeks here while he stayed for a couple months at a time at Sean's Astronomy Shop in Battleground Washington, abount 30 miles north of Portland Oregon under relatively darker skies. I was not doing the sketching then but wished that I had. That was in 2003 ~ 2004 before venturing off to Fiji for three trips over 8 months time.

I just wish that I had known that CN and all of you were here back then.

Mark

Updated:
I just found today that the book can also be loaned through other sources as some local county libraries will request a borrowed copy from other libraries across the nation.

Also, I ordered a copy through Barnes & Noble and it turns out that they can get it faster (within 4 or 5 days) than the largest book store in the country here, Powell's City of Books.
