Impact Crater North of Alamo Nevada / Video
      #2653664 - 09/20/08 05:09 PM

Hi List,

I recently had a chance to check out a possible meteorite impact crater North of Alamo, Nevada. In the 1940's a large fireball was witnessed by residents of the area. The crater was found the following day on a mountainside. Anyone knowing my interest in meteorites understands I will take off on a moments notice to spend the day in the field hunting for meteorites. I would say 98 percent of the time alI come home with is a sunburn and an empty lunch bag. I decided to check the crater out and spend a day looking for meteorites.

Sonny,

Too bad you didn't find anything (except great views). Keep it up.

Hi,
Thanks for the great replies. Ed, I really don't know for sure
what caused this crater.Nevada has been a testing ground for many years. What I was trying to find were pieces of meteorite or fragments of metal. But I found neither. It may take weeks to fully check the area out. There are so many variables when it comes to meteorite fireballs, falls and meteorite impact craters, we may never know. I have plans to go back, when the weather cools down.I would like to have a solid answer to what caused the crater.

Sonny

Hey Sonny,

I really enjoyed the video and I too am sorry the area wasn't littered with meteorites. What a beautiful area though and if any meteorites have ever fallen near there, I'm sure someday you're going to find them.

I hope you saved that tin foil for the next time you're near area 51. I was hunting once and a guy stopped me to ask what I was looking for. When I told him "meteorites" he asked me why I wasn't wearing a tin foil hat. The question took me by surprise and the best I could come up with was "Oh, we don't wear them in public anymore".

Hi Maria,

In my relatively short time in the meteorite world, I have run into some strange questions and statements from people not acquainted with meteorites, but I have yet to get the tinfoil hat question.

Regards and clear skies,

Trivia fact for the day: They pronounce it, "a-LA-mo" or "a-LAM-0," not a-la-MO

Hi Sonny,

Did you geiger counter measure anything above background at the a-la-MO crater?

What? No geiger counter? You're braver than I thought.
