Low Power Practice on M11 and Jupiter
      #2656232 - 09/22/08 10:27 AM Attachment (21 downloads)

This is more practice for Uganda, but it also serves as a nice self-reminder of what can be seen with a given set of tools that result in varying fields-of-view and magnifications. Everything here is manual. If you care to look, I started with Jupiter with glow in the sky near sunset (upper left) then you can go clockwise around the paper through the M11 sketches. I recently did a similar exercise with M4 at high power; everything here is low power since that is what we will be doing.

There is a very real possibility we may be restricted to daytime, so we have been mentally registering the southern skies near sunset and the moon positions/appearance during day time hours. It all makes for a very interesting problem set.

Not shown but also worked is the refractor with astro-video on a 5 inch TV screen....so 8 or 10 can huddle around during sessions that concentrate on sketching...so we can do it together. It worked....solar cells to charge the battery by day...battery runs the camera and monitor at night or day time. Our host has a projector with a video input so we may be able to hook the camera to the scope, project the moon or a nice bright object, and do a chalk talk with translation to the little village. We shall see!!

Roland,

You have proven once again that with modest equipment you can always find good targets for sketching. I hope you bring some of your naked eye lunar and other sketches with you on the trip. They may prove to be instructive.

Frank

Roland,

I really look forward to the Uganda sketches. I would not worry about the low power approach. Chances are that the skies are very dark and very suitable for low power instruments.

Roland,

The Wild Duck Cluster is one of my favorite OC's, and you managed a very good sketch using binos. Naturally the "King of the Planets" is equally awesome. Nice.
