Early Saturn
      #2658969 - 09/23/08 03:45 PM

Caught my first Saturn of this apparition this morning due east about a half hour before sunrise. The spikes of her 4° ring tilt were still obvious in the heavy turbulence.
Without the high profile rings to reflect sunlight, Saturn only shines near a modest 1st magnitude.
The decreasing and teasing ring tilt up and back from -0.8° in December marks the last rehearsal before the climactic northern ring crossing in September 09.

Yes, I'm dissappointed that I've just gotten into astronomy as the rings are closing, but I guess this way I'll get to see the opening process over the next few years.

You will have a real treat coming. It is worth the wait. I have not seen them full on myself but I have seen them at enough of an angle to appreciate how they will look at best viewing angle.

With the rings closed we'll be able to see surface details on Saturn and also moon transits.

Surface detail? On Saturn? Do you mean cloud detail?
