Lest anybody think I am belittling craigslist by posting these ads here on CN, far from it...I have used it myself and ended up with the first two scopes listed in my signature, the Obsession and the C8, and I've also sold my Orion XT12i via craigslist. As always, if you know what you want and know something about the item, you'll do OK. These ads are just some of the comic relief that can be found regularly online, like the numerous ads that have the reflectors pointing to the ground, etc.

I went to Craig's List for Fort Lauderdale just to see what they might have here. Found one of your Craig's List Wonders! Celestron NexStar GPS 11' Telescope - $24000 (Ft. Lauderdale) Not sure if there is just an extra zero or what?...
$24K for an 11-foot scope doesn't sound like all that bad a deal to me. I didn't even know they made them that big. How many D-batteries does that drive take? It'd be a bummer to buy a scope and have to wait for my next paycheck to buy the batteries to run all the bells and whistles.

Somebody else said it in a much-earlier-thread, but most of the stuff on Craigslist is overvalued ju-ehh, ,,,ummm... let's just say,,, -it's overvalued. Some of it is at reasonable prices, but much of it, is very much, not.
A lot of people want to break even with what they paid for the (usually) dept-store scope. Which I just don't understand-- why should I pay them "X" dollars for it, just because that's how much they bought it for? Obviously they didn't think it was worth that much! ~

I just purchased my first scope off of craigslist. Orion Skyquest XT of the 6" variant. Came with a 2x shorty barlow, laser collimator, telerad plus all the extras that come with the scope new. All for $250, had never been used.

Sure they do, but... nah, it's probably that he's giving the focal length instead of the aperture. At f/12, that would make it about 11".

Shawn...yeah, I've been lamenting their recent skid in the OTO MLB thread.
Which is why I'm spending time online reading bogus and silly ads for scopes...takes my mind off the Dbacks!

Joe,
I'm sorry, I think I came down a little too hard on the ole Dynamax. I wasn't trying to insult your 'scope or anyone else's. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed yours.
Clear skies,
Jeff

Here's a "too good to be true" deal that I emailed the guy about:
http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/spo/837789250.html
Doh! It would have been an EXCELLENT deal if it wasn't a scam!

Jerry,
That one's already flagged for removal. Was it the apo w/pictures of it on someone's snowy porch? This scam (if not the scope) has been making the rounds on CL for awhile.
I really like Craigslist despite the occasional scams and crazy claims. I've sold some items on it, bought a few, and intend to advertise one of my telescopes on there when I get around to taking some photos. The people who created the site and run it really have done a great job: no internet ads, you don't have to pay for your postings, the website doesn't take a commission, and as in this case easy flagging from users when something isn't right. Like most things though, you just have to use your best judgement. Caveat emptor.
Oh, and congrats JKCreates on a nice deal and welcome to CloudyNights!

I tried looking this one up on the net but I can't find this exact scope anywhere but I am sure the original price and asking price is just a bit off

Well, I thought I'd add a little postscript to this thread. I was on CL last night and noticed an add for a "Nexstar Celstron GPS" telescope. I put in a call to the seller who gave me a little more info. I agreed to meet him and take a look.
Well, I got to his place and sure enough, there was a Nexstar 8 GPS in his corner. He had the original box, manual, all of the included accessories, and the scope was virtually pristine. I asked him if I could take it out back and give it a try, and after finding the power outlet and plugging the scope in, the GPS comes on and the scope aligned! So I gave him his money right there.
The gentleman's wife came out as I was packing up, and she gave me the story behind the telescope. It seems she mentioned to her mother in law about four years ago that she's interested in the planets. The next thing she knows, this telescope shows up on her door. What a nice gift! She said she and her husband only used it once or twice, which I believe judging by it's condition and their lack of knowledge about how to use it. With a few small kids in the house they never had the time to use it and it sat in the corner.
So I loaded up my new scope and took home my "new" four year old Nexstar 8 GPS...which I paid $600 for!
Clear skies,
Jeff
