Dwarf Planet Named for Hawaiian Goddess new

The IAU just announced (a few hours ago) the name of the latest Dwarf Planet in our system. It is called Haumea.

Pretty neat.

An interesting side note to this announcement, is that the official discoverers, Ortiz, et al, had proposed a different name. The name, Haumea, was proposed by Brown, et al. This has sparked a debate within the minor planet community about the propriety of the process that led to this decision, with some expressing concern that the official discoverers were denied the right to name their object.

Interested folks can read more about this on the Minor Planet Mail List: MPML

Here we are some eight years into the 21st century and we are still naming planets after imaginary deities. What is going on here?
