Another Article on Meteorites (Astron. Mag.)
      #2663346 - 09/25/08 08:55 PM

The November issue of Astronomy Magazine arrived in today's mail. The cover has a small photo with the words, "Rare angrite meteorites may have come from Mercury, p.32".
Have not read it yet, but the photos and graphics are very interesting at a glance.
Looking forward to everyone's commentary.

All the best,
Mark J.D.

I had been watching a Angrite slice on Ebay for several days "buy now $500" and was ready to add it to my collection but thought I wait one more day.
After getting my Astronomy mag. I went back to see if it was still there and to my surprise it was still there and waiting for me to snatch it right up,except it was,"Buy now $1000".How does that quote go about hesitateing go

Hi Dick,

How big (in weight) was the angrite slice you were eyeballing?

Meteorite prices fluctuate like wind direction. Have you tried combing other sources besides eBay?

Regards and clear skies,

Hi Mark,

A paper I read in a recent issue of Meteorite Magazine (by a respected researcher) all but shoots down the angrite-Mercury connection. I was on the fence before reading the article, but after reading it, I would bet against any Mercury-Angrite connection. I wish there was, since it would make my Angrite micromount more interesting and valuable to me.

Meteorite Magazine (Volume 14, #2, May 2008) - "Do Angrites come from Mercury" (page 7), by Melinda Hutson. Melinda Hutson is a Research Assistant Professor at Portland State University and is curator of the Cascadia Meteorite Laboratory collection. Her article is well-written, definitive, and contains a slew of academic references to the latest research on the subject. In short, her article casts very serious doubts on the Mercury connection.

Regards and clear skies,

HI Mike,

It is 7.1g, NWA 4662.Acording to the Meteorite Society the total weight was 60g.Thats what the article in astronomy mag. was bringing up that angrite may not have originated from mercury but from the asteroid belt.It gave the pros&cons for Mercury, the judge is still out to lunch pondering its fate.

I finally got a copy of this issue and have glanced over the Angrite article. Although I have not read it in depth yet.

It's always nice to see meteorites getting some press.

Personally, like I said above previously, I am in the camp that does not believe angrites come from Mercury. The evidence is just not compelling and is full of holes. I would say it is "possible" that angrites may eventually be proven to come from Mercury or a Mercury-like parent body, but much more research needs to be done to prove this.

Regardless of whether they come from Mercury or not, angrites are a very rare type with some unusual properties. They are still very interesting from a collector's standpoint and from a scientific standpoint.

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG
