About a year ago I posted a thread about getting the street light changed at the corner near my house. Long story short e-mails and letters to the utility accomplished nothing. An e-mail to my city councilman got the light changed in about 3 weeks. Happy, happy me!
On the way home from the market tonight I thought I would take a drive and map out a 1 mile route to ride my new bicycle on. The goal being to be able to do 10 miles in an hour before January 1, 2009. The cost of gas and the size of my behind being the primary determining factors in that decision. A trip to British Columbia next year was also an incentive, it would be great to be able to ride around the Sunshine Coast area of BC.
My little historical neighborhood is about mile square. A beautiful park with a lake you can sail on on the southern border and small quiet streets with the exception of a couple that cut thru on the way to the blvd's at the north and south borders of the "hood". No signals, stopsigns/speed bumps every couple of blocks to keep the traffic speed down.
I haven't ridden my bike or walked much this last year since I've been getting hammered at work. I usually come home and collapse. On a clear night I'll open the observatory and fall asleep at the EP around midnight. For the most part I've been a slug.
Well an amazing thing happened while I wasn't looking. ALL of the street lights in the neighborhood have been changed out to Cobra fixtures that point straight down and only light the intersections. From corner to corner in between them is DARK! I mean walk with a flashlight, wear reflectors on your shoes and light up your dogs collar DARK! Last year when I went out walking or riding you could see every house from one end of the block to the other, not any more. If the porch lights are off the houses just disappear. It's fantatstic!
The down side is I need to put a head and tail light system on my new bike so I can see and be seen. Money I will happily spend!

Here in Ontario Canada it is the law all new street lights have to be the new style. But they are still using the same mounts on older ones that they replace. These mounts do not point straight down.

I've been noticing new lights on the turnpike have the flat bottoms and are rectangular; I also see one of these in the midst of the older ones so I guess there is a replacement program going on as well. I haven't seen them in town however.
