Lumicon UHC or Orion Ultrablock new
      #24611 - 12/01/03 04:09 PM

I have a 4.5in. reflector and I am considering a filter. Should I buy a Lumicon UHC or an Orion Ultrablock? From what I've read they are similiar, both are narrowband passing hydrogen-beta and ionized oxygen. I have had recommendations for both. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

I believe the bandpass on the Orion is a bit wider, which will yield stars with slightly brighter images, and slightly lower contrast for the nebulae. The UHC also passes a lot of deep red (but not H-Alpha). This can cause a slight red halo around bright stars on Achromat refractors. Otherwise, I buy whichever is cheaper. Don't forget Thousand Oaks filters as well.

I have the Orion Ultrablock and with the 24.5mm Meade, 17mm Nagler T/4 and the 11mm Nagler T/6, the view it great stars turn a bright blue but the nebular cloud come out real good having not used the Lumicon UHC I can only comment on the Orion Ultrablock you can't lose. I have the Orion XT10" F/4.7, and they say you can't see the Horsehead nebular without a 16"scope or less but I think I saw it using the Orion Ultrablock the two times I view it, they said you need the H-beta filter. When you do view it (M42) look next to the four stars in the center of the nebular, thats were I saw the Horsehead nebular (I think).

The Horsehead nebula is actually near the western-most belt star in Orion. I've seen it in an 8" and a 10" scope under VERY dark skies at about 8,000 feet altitude. No filter was required. I haven't seen it since. If I were getting a 2" filter, I'd definitely get the Ultrablock...it's half the price of a UHC or OIII.

Hi Rick,

I have 3 Lumicons and really love the things. The one Orion filter I own is a 2" moon filter. Right from new the Orion does not thread properly on any of my 2" ep's or my 2" binoviewer nosepiece. I'm a little dissappointed with it for that reason alone. Maybe I got a bum filter, I don't know. Under the magnifying glass the threads appear perfect. My Lumicons fit perfectly. I haven't heard of anyone else with the same problem, but it has discouraged me from buying Orion filters in the future. So from my experience I'm saying go for the Lumicons, their price is higher but you get what you pay for. Others here will disagree, but then why buy a Tele Vue when you can get a Skywatcher right?

What is the minimum configuration (aperture/focal ratio) to use a narrow band filter?

Is it worth using an Ultrablock in my scope (180mm - f/6 dob) or a bit more apperture would be required?

Thanks in advance.

I use a UHC (very similar to an Ultrablock) in my 70mm f-6.8 Ranger with good results.

I hope it'd be worth using an UltraBlock in your 180mm f/6, since I just started using it with my 150 mm f/6. First night out on the front porch looking over the neighbor's Christmas lights was better than I expected. I'll know more in a couple of weeks when it gets dark.
