Sorta off topic, but I stumbled across this program, called "Galileoscope Companion," today. Has anyone had a look at it? I'm at work right now, so I can't unzip it and try it. It looks like another type of planetarium program, but geared towards the Galileoscope. It looks interesting!
Cheers, Kevin

Kevin~ I just downloaded it and took a quick peek. A nice piece of software with some nifty features, but the guy could use some kind of documentation to explain what is going on. You can add your own city by editing a file called "citylist.txt" in the scopekit folder. I did it with mine and it works perfectly fine.

Cool! Thanks, Mike! I got to play with it a little bit at home last night, and I added my location to the citylist file like you suggested. Works great!
I didn't get to play with all of the features last night. Do you know if the star chart can be printed out, or is it screen only? I think that the original version was made for a Pocket-type PC, so maybe printing was never figured into the XP version.
I know what you mean about the lack documentation. Since it's a beta release, maybe we can put a bug in the author's ear to add some. I just sent an email to him along those lines, so we'll see how that goes.
Cheers, Kevin

Woohoo! Mine arrived! Check out the ultra stable mount I'm using.
(Click on them for a larger view...)
I'm quite pleased with the optical quality, there is some distortion around the edges but other then that it makes a very clear image! My parents got me a toy telescope years ago which probably costs more then this one, while the Galileoscope delivers a much better view!
I'd like to invite everybody that has received his or her Galileoscope and uses Flickr to join this group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/galileoscope/pool/
Thanks!

Nice pictures, Zoeff! Thanks for posting them!
How was the imaging with the barlow in place? Was there any significant degradation?
Cheers, Kevin

I tried imaging with the barlow, but the degradation is increased when using it and couldn't get a sharp picture with the camera.

I managed to get a proper picture while using the barlow:

Compared to my own eyes, this picture and the ones posted above give me exactly the same quality. (So expect to see increased distortion around the edges when using the barlow)

Still not bad at all for plastic lenses! Thanks for posting that one as well! I'm really curious as to how it will look with my own eyepieces and barlow...

The two extra O-rings can be used to help secure the two halves of the telescope in place (note the two grooves in the telescope body). They are optional as the end caps seem to secure the body well enough.
I can't find any grooves inside the telescope body.. Oh, almost forgot. In case anyone from the Galileoscope project itself is reading this thread.... Thank you!!

I think the grooves are around the outside of the telescope body, on either side of the Galileoscope logo. That's how it looks in the illustrations I've seen, at any rate!
In fact, I can see the grooves in the photo you posted of your scope.

Ah, just figured it out - There are 2 grooves on each end of the focuser tube.
EDIT: I've still got 2 even smaller O-rings left. Hmm..

Kevin~ I didn't get to check that out although I suspect you can. I am still waiting for my scopes.

Actually, I think that the smaller ones are for the focuser tube and the bigger ones are for the body of the scope?? I'm totally guessing because I haven't received mine yet...

Same here. I sent the author, Robert Brenner, an email telling him that I enjoyed the program and suggested that a quick start guid or some sort of documentation would be nice. Here's his reply:
Hi Kevin,
Thank you very much for your kind feedback.
To be honest, your's is the first I received.
For months I did not see any interest probably because shipping
of the Galileoscope has been repeatedly delayed.
I do agree with with you that to some extend a users' guide would
be helpful to explore all features. As soon as I see more demand,
and, if I have free time to spare, I will put together a simple guide.
My Galileoscope hasn't arrived either. After receipt, and testing
a few modifications to the software may be required.
The city list still lacks altitude data (for users in Cuzco, etc).
I am also considering to add bright Messier objects to the
Planets Chart, however, depending on demand.
After all, it is really simple software, probably not of interest
for users of The Sky and other fully featured packages.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your kind suggestion.
Cheers
Robert

I thought that was nice!
I'm thinking that if we want to talk about this more, we should move it to the Software forum...

The 2 bigger ones have the same diameter as the focusing tube, the smaller ones are even smaller. Weird!

Are they pretty stretchy? Possibly the smaller ones can stretch enough to fit on the focuser assembly and the larger ones can be put on the body? Maybe they're small to give them more tension when they're installed. Just a thought...

The smallest set can go on the focusing tube if stretched a lot. However, the bigger set can't get on the main tube because it's too thick and has too many obstacles on it to make that reasonable.
This video (where one of the main GS guys is the presenter) doesn't seem to use more then 2 O-rings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1iByPaAG0U
