I live in the UK and got my Galileoscopes this morning. (Order # 17,500 ish, ordered 29th May 2009) Great pieces of kit, we assembled them quite quickly, and daytime tests show the optics are indeed excellent.
The scale of this volunteer project is astounding. Now to convince the naysayers in the UK....

Has anyone tried applying some kind of lubricant to the focusing tube? The 50x view is great (got a sweet look at Jupiter and his buddies the other night) but focusing is an excercise in frustration.

You could try a little lithium lubricant from a spray can. Spray a little on a tissue, and use that or your finger to lubricate the tube. Just don't get it on the lenses.

I think I'll try that. My brother and dad also have some lubricant for plastics at their electronics shop that I think could work.
I'm considering modifying the scope a bit so that I can focus it by turning a nob on the side. I don't think that would be hard to do, and it would probably increase the quality of my viewing quite a bit.
All in all it's an awesome scope for fifteen bucks. 25X is definitely where the scope shines, as the image is much more bright and clear. 50X looks okay, but it seems like there isn't quite enough aperture for that much power.

I don't see how you could add a turn knob. If you can figure out how to, let us know. That knowledge could come in handy on other scopes, too. I have a short tube 6" rich field reflector that I've hobbled together that has a push-pull type focuser. I had to modify the focuser by cutting off a section, otherwise it would not have had enough back-focus. Unfortunately, I had to cut off the turn knob to do it.
By the way, if the Galileoscope's focus tube is too tight, you could try sanding the contact surfaces with a small piece of sand paper, first rough, then fine, as necessary. Just be sure to test the fit often as you go, so you won't sand away too much. Applying a couple thin, opposing strips of Teflon to the inner surface of the scope tube might help after you sand.

Well, I'm new to all of this stuff, so I may not be considering this correctly. This is my first exposure to working with telescopes.
I imagine a notched rod attached at one end to the edge of the focusing tube so that it is flush (I want to make sure it doesn't get in the way of light passing through the scope). This notched rod would feed through a simple gear, which would in turn be attached to the knob.
I would have to drill through the plastic and find parts small enough, but it seems feasible, assuming I can get everything out of the way of the light path.

I just got mine today order number 2264. They're definitely not arriving in the order they were purchased... Oh well. For $15 can we really complain?

FYI, I ordered mine March 2nd (order #2298) and haven't received the email yet. I imagine it takes a while to go through a stack of 2000 boxes.
Still no email or galileoscope (btw, I'm in Seattle, WA, USA). I'm not too worried. I figure they made a mistake when they publicly said they were shipping in order of orders. It's probably technically true, but not in the visible way people would expect. I grew up on ads that always said "allow 4-6 weeks for delivery", and I figure this project is using whatever processes that was based on - rather than the newfangled (and higher overhead) just-in-time, where you click submit and the box arrives within 2 days.
So if the shipping process means things will arrive in seemingly random order, and they don't have paid staff fielding the thousands of calls and emails, I have no choice but sit tight and wait until the end of July. If you search on twitter, people are receiving boxes daily in no apparent order, so I expect we'll all get ours very soon.
If it's a few days into August and I haven't received mine, then I'll worry a bit about having fallen through the cracks - but by then the flood of calls and emails to them should have subsided and it will be easier to get through and figure out what's going on.

Yeah, I know. No biggie really. It'll still be a plastic telescope even if I do get it...

I received my Galileoscope today. Neat.
But I have the say, the directions to put it together are basically worthless.

I got mine today; I'm in Wash DC suburbs; order #15551, placed on Apr 11.
The additional instructions in this thread helped me put it together. Thanks guys on the forum, and the Galileoscope team!

Order #12655, order date 29 March.
They'll get here when they get here. It's a public outreach/education program, not a business. Many of the staff are volunteers, not paid employees. For my money (darned little, all things considered), the Galiieoscope Project has pulled off a minor miracle already. I hope they break even after it's all said and done.

This is what the eyepiece does, it's normal.
There are ways to correct the image but astronomers never bother as it puts more glass in the way.

Yes, as Zoeff says, that is exactly how the refracting telescope works. It doesn't matter when you are looking at the Moon or Jupiter, but is confusing if you are trying to use it during the day. You need an "erecting" eyepiece or an "erect image adapter" which you place below the eyepeice. Here are a couple of these on an Australian retail website.
See here for web page
You will find them in your local telescope retailers. I have the Vixen adapter and it works well in the Galileoscope with the plossl eyepiece.
