EQUINOX ED80
      #2669480 - 09/29/08 08:06 AM

Hello:

I have this scope for one week. I would like to know you opinion about this scope in terms of optic quality and CA (is it really a true APO?), I have percibed a bit of magenta or violet at the edge of very bright objects.

Well I would like to know your experiences.

Is it better corrected the regular Skywatcher ED80 (f:7.5)?

Regards,

Alex

I have one of these and have been looking for color without finding it. Have you been using different design eyepieces? I have tried out a couple orthoscopics, a few different Plossls, and Vixen Lanthanums without finding color in the image.

If this doesn't change what you are seeing, then it may be real color. If you could tell more about what you did to find it I'll take a look. But so far, I'm getting perfect color on Jupiter, which generally is an acid test.

Hello Rich:

I use to put a 13 Ethos and Radians 10 and 3 mm. For example when point to a group of street lights I can see that color at the ones situated from 2/3 to the edge, it is a tiny line of violet. Another example, when on daylight you point to a metalic (galvanized color)tower of a power line and you move it to the 2/3 of the filed of view, you can see a tiny and very thin violet line at the edge of the metallic bars.

OK, I will go looking there. I am also getting ready to do some photo trials, including using the William Optics FF II reducer to get to f/5. That should make any false color problem explode, hopefully (not hoping to see it, but rather provide a concrete answer).

At the moment I am socked in by clouds. Talk about a new scope curse. I'll look when I can.

BTW, I have been using a Celestron 80ED for a few years- the color correction in the Equinox looks better, so far.

Hi Alex!

Why did you change your TSA-102 for the Equinox?

OK,

Finally had some clear air so I could go looking for false color. I did a series of different lenses and combinations (barlow, no barlow, Vixen LV lens, Plossl, Orthoscopic). I was not able to find false color on Jupiter, though there was pretty good detail. What was more interesting was attempting to get false color on Vega, which finally showed up with a 4mm Plossl (125X). What I was able to produce was a small violet zone around Vega which moved away from the center of the field as the star moved to the far edge. The artifact was about twice the size of the star itself. Given how hard it has been to find, I have trouble calling it objectionable color. I wasn't able to produce the reds other related scopes have shown. The C80ED I have been using clearly shows red rims on objects as false color.

On photography, I am shooting a series on double cluster using an APS sized detector with the William Optics FFII 0.8 reducer. The indications are this is producing pinpoint stars across the field. I will post the stack when I have had a chance to process it (no, that won't be tomorrow :-D).

I've had the Equinox now for almost 2 years. Wonderful little scope. Well made, good focuser. Very good colour correction for F6 and a doublet.

The 7.5 will give better colour correction. This scope is also larger. It all depends what you are after. The Equinox was made for those wide field views, especially of the Milky Way, open clusters. It frames the Double Cluster beautifully with a 17 Uwan - as well as M45. No colour is evident on these targets, and maybe a touch on the moon.

I don't normally bother with high powered views on bright stars, and frankly don't care if there is a touch of colour. Good lenses - sharp snappy focus - great day time scope for terrestrial use as well. The smaller size over a 7.5 is important to me for tripod use.

It's F/6 so some colour would not be surprising. If it's detectable and objectionable you can always send the telescope back for replacement. Sky-Watcher offer a one year warranty on the "Equinox" range.

Thanks to all:

My idea is to mount the Equinox on top of my C8 SCT in order to get wide fields.

My current EP collection is:

26 mm, 13 mm and 10 mm.

What do you think about to buy a powermate 2,5x to be used with the Equinox?. This will provide me 96x and 125x together with my 13 mm and 10 mm. I have thougt that will be a good range of magnifications for this little scope, considering that I have the C8 for planetary and lunar observations.

What do you think about getting this powermate? good idea?

Thanks,

Alex

OK, I posted my first Equinox 80 image to my first light report for the ED 80. It really looks to me like it should work quite well as a general purpose scope. So far, I have found eyepieces between 26mm and 12mm give the most pleasing views. I'm not sure about plopping down cash to usevit at higher power. But it does seem to handle about 110x effortlessly. Then again, I have a C5 to put in that role, which offers good planetary performance.

No need to send it back. It's perfect for my needs, and shows NO colour on my targets. This is a wide field scope, and rarely gets used on the moon or planets. That's what my Tec is for. All I'm trying to say is that the little bit of in focus colour on high powered views on Vega are of little concern to me.

High powered views are not what this scope is about.

The weather finally cooperated tonight so I could play with looking at the Moon some. In sharpest focus, the telescope definitely projects that "Realer than real" look I personally crave with eyepieces longer than 20 mm. The image still looks very good at 9mm, but there is definitely a small amount of violet beyond the edge of the moon, but no real lime-yellow rind on the edge of the moon. Moving the limb to where it is on the verge of of leaving the field did reveal a thin but brilliant red line along the edge. In comparison, the color correction appears much better than the TV-85s I have played with. The image with a 4mm eyepiece on Jupiter does have a violet halo. But truth be told, I expect the C5 will still be the planetary grab-n-go around my place.

It`s weird! I have not seen any violet halo or red line over the lunar limb or Jupiter with my TV85. Such views have been always free of false color, even at 200x. Sometimes, an slight color on Sirius, maybe for atmospheric diffraction.

Thus, It`s hard to accept the statement: "In comparison, the color correction appears much better than the TV-85s..." if the Equinox shows such aberrations.

Best regards.

Gentlemen - we need to remember that an eyepiece can introduce these aberations along with sky conditions. It can be a completely different view the next night.

My Nagler 9 T6 will give a "ring of fire" around very bright object, as well as my Uwan 17. Abbe Ortho - none visible.

Another night - different sky conditions will give other results. Remember that an eyepiece can also introduce such aberations. Naglers and Uwans can bring about a so called "ring of fire" around a bright object.

You need to make detailed observations over many sessions with side by side comparisons to determine such a general statement.

However, the Equinox is a sweet scope, and good value for the money. A keeper for me.

I really went looking for color. And the edges are on the scale where I can't decide if they are eyepiece or not. And you're right, even using reflectors it is possible to see color from the eyepiece. The thing with the Equinox 80 is it is just a really willing scope, and it projects the "Realer than real" high contrast images only well made fast optics can.

What I really think about the Equinox is I wish they were available when I was a 13 year old. So, getting rid of it is out of the question. I am thinking it is time to permanently convert another scope into a focusing target to make using the Equinox 80 for photography easier.

Last night I probed the Equinox over the moon with my Ethos 13 mm and Radian 10 mm finding absolutelly no color on the edge or any other place.

I have used a TV85 extensivelly during 8 months and I must say that It showed some collor in very bright objects, which is obvious being a doublet, this is not a collor free scope. The only scope I have probed that showed me color free images is the TSA102.

I agree with you, the Equinos ED80 is a very, very good scope for the price, very good mechanics an optics.

Alex

Yes, it´s true. And the difference between samples could be a factor to consider too, even when exists a very good QC. Mr Rich have seen color in the Equinox and the TV85 (more color in the last one). Mr Abutu have not seen any color in the Equinox, but in the TV85 did. I have not an Equinox (by the way, I don't doubt about its excellence), but the color that I have appreciated in my TV sample has been so insignificant (for me!) and variable night to night, that I have been able to conclude that it is mainly due to atmospheric conditions and not so far to the degree of correction per se. I see some color in the star test (but I don`t use to watch defocusing stars ), but is no appreciable in my purely visual applications (except on some very bright objects SOME nights)- Maybe, in imaging applications the story could be different.
