Mission delayed until January or February 2009 at the earliest.
Primary downlink data channel has failed, and efforts to restart it were not successful. Engineers will try to switch to the backup channel, but now they want to make sure they don't need to bring new downlink hardware up with them as well on the servicing mission.

I watched the Discovery Channel series "When we left Earth" and they had a good segment about Hubble. It said that Hubble is the deepest mission the shuttle ever takes due to it's extremely high orbit. The first Hubble repair mission took 10 days to complete with records for the longest extra-vehicular excursions. All of this amount to huge costs when compared to rocket launched disposable life telescopes like Chandra (X-Ray), Spitzer (Infra-Red), and James Webb Space Telescope (Infra Red). Spitzer was launched from a Delta rocket, Chandra and Hubble from the shuttle.
Spitzer cost $720 million from inception through launch. The Hubble repair mission will be about 1 Billion.
Another interesting factoid. Chandra is about 200 times higher than Hubble - about halfway to the moon. Spitzer is in a trailing earth orbit that lets it drift away slowly at about 16 million km a year, but it will re-intersect earth in 60 years for a harmless burn-up and splash down.
