Daystar vs Lunt Hydrogen Alpha new
      #2665365 - 09/26/08 08:26 PM

Last week I was at the PATS conference in Pasadena, I was fortunate enough to get a side by side demonstration of a Daystar Quantum and a Lunt H-alpha. I had never looked through a Lunt before and was really curious. Although I was not disappointed with the Lunt's performance, the Daystar clearly out performed it. It had brighter views even at higher magnification. It also showed better surface detail and prominences.

Later on, someone brought out a PST, and as expected, both the Lunt and the Daystar outperformed it. Both were brighter, even while at higher magnification than the PST. The PST does pretty well for looking at the whole Sun, while the Lunt, and especially the Daystar, can be used for high magnification while maintaining detail and brightness.

Has anyone else compared these? What did you think?

Hi Sean,

Could you be more specific on the aperture and bandpass of both filters? Thanks!

Forget the filters what was the apature of the scope that the Daystar was attacthed to? When I had my Daystra ATM on my 152mm Astrophysics the view was bright also.

Sean,

Your observations would be pretty much down the line.
The Daystar was a $4000 filter set so I would hope to kiss a cow it gave the best view. Mounted on one of the new 110 or 115mm Astro-Tech refractors would also help with the additional light gathering and resolution.
If you are referring to the Lunt 60mm telecope unit he had then you are talking about a $1000 set up with only 60mm aperture. Of course, it has enough aperture to easy best the little 40mm PST. Still, at $500 the PST is a true bargain. So, how much money ya got?!! For HA observing the key is balancing the $$ expediture with the expectations. I'll always remember the views through a double stacked 90mm Coronado filter on a NP101. You want
3-D? You got it.

R'E shauns astroshop, Mate when you compared the LUNT and the DAYSTAR, were they both singel stacked or Double Stacked?..I am thinking of buying a 60mm Lunt @ 0.5 angstroms, with 1200 Blocking Filter, or possibly the 35mm DAYSTAR 0.5 angstroms PENTA. I am not to sure what way to go as yet though. cyou..Lloyd...

Daystar make their filters lower bandpass by increasing the reflectivity, flatness and parallelism of the etalon itself and not by double stacking. They use mica instead of air as the spacer.

Ok, The Daystar was on a Astro Tech 111mm with a 4x Powermate and 50mm Plossl and and the Lunt was using a 100mm and was less power, but I don't know exactly what eyepiece he was using.
