I would like to ask for your comments on this eyepiece, is
it a good eyepiece or not, is the fov uncomfortably small when actually viewing with it, i understand its about 36 degrees?

thanks
mike

We used to offer those back in the '80s (when I worked in an astro shop).

I recall trying out the 45mm.
Extreme eye relief and like looking down a barrel.
On the plus side, very sharp.... but not unexpected for a Plossl of that focal length and narrow FOV.

It was my least favorite of the Celestron/Vixen "silver tops"... and a very slow seller at the time.

I've had 3, 4? 45mm Silvertops. Eventually I ended up with a 42mm Ultima. On a direct comparison the Ultima has more contrast, making the 45mm Silvertop look a bit washed out. I doubt the 3mm size (magnification) difference was the reason. I would bet the more modern coatings to make a greater difference.

I found the same comparing a 30mm Japan Silvertop with a Celestron eyepiece that some have said has the same optics as the Ultima line; it has a block top barrel with red lettering.

I had the 45mm Silvertop for a few years before I did the comparision, and was happy with it. It isn't a bad eyepiece, but I think there are better ones out there.

On the other hand, the 36, 26, 22, and 17mm silvertops are all quite nice. I'm still getting a handle on the higher power ones. The 26mm, is fairly close to a Televue 26mm, for example.

Scopes used: TV-101, Celestron (Vixen) 90mm f/9 Fluorite, Vixen 114 ED f/5.3, Teleport 10".

Hi Mike,
I have a pair of 45mm ST I used to use with the BT Telebinos. Haven't used them in awhile. As inidicated they have lots of ER and are like looking down a toilet paper tube to some extent.
Not sure I completely agree that the 42mm Ultima has that much better contrast, a little better.
What are you looking at the 45mm for? As indicated the 36mm is a better FL since your FOV is limited by the 1.25" format.
I also used a pair of 26mm Silvertops until I ran across a pair of 26mm Vixen have slightly better contrast & detail.

Hi Bill,
I was considering the 45mm as a low power "finder " eyepiece. However after considering the narrow AFOV, i've decided to go with a 32mm 1.25 inch erfle.
regards
Mike

Good Choice and better suited to the application depending on the quality of the Erfle. Any decent Erfle will work.
