Dual axis controls for the CG-4 mout question.
      #2672418 - 09/30/08 04:33 PM

I'm hoping to buy an XLT 102 with the CG-4 mount but I'm apprehensive because I want to buy the dual axis controls with it and they look exactly like the CG-5 dual axis controls. The problem is, I have a dual axis cg-5 setup and I've gone through two of them already. They seem to have inherent problems in the hand control. I don't want to wind up with the same problems that the CG=5 has. Does anyone know if they are the same controls. If so, is there some other solution to a dual axis control? I've tried JMI but he couldn't help. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Carl
PS I don't want to buy a goto in that they are expensive and don't really use them in that I almost exclusively view the moon and planets.

There is no good motor solution for the CG-4/EQ3 mount. Yeah, you can get tracking motors, but they won't slew at speed. And the only other motor solution I've seen isn't sold in the U.S., but is in Canada, but costs about $800 USD, so it's hardly worth it, although it is a GOTO system.
Someone really needs to come out with a workable solution for the CG-4 mount.
There is a drive available from Tech2000 (the Dob Driver people) that they say is for the EQ4 and similar mounts, and it apparently has dial adjustable speeds, so maybe it would work, but I don't know. They want $249 for that, and say it's a complete kit. Servo drive motors, brackets, connectors, clutches allowing use of the manual slo-mo controls, and the manual. Runs on a 9V battery. Got it from their latest catalog. it's called the NF-EQ4.
