Just wanted to know how you would compare the LXD75 to the CG5 mount? Is the LXD75 rated to carry more weight, and is the mount bigger? I am guessing the LXD75 is less trouble prone compared with the older LXD55 mount.

It is my understanding that they are basically the same thing. Other than the control systems they don't differ by very much.

I have owned both and they are pretty much the same in most areas. The CG5 tripod legs extend a little further which is nice. I like the fit and finish of the LXD75 better though. The Meade comes standard with a polar finder whereas the CG5 does not. The Meade tripod although shorter, also comes with 2 adjustment bolts per leg, the CG5 one per. All and all they are both great eq mounts in their price range.

I have both mounts and the comments above are all accurate. I have run the two mounts side by side through the setup procedures using the same stars and then did gotos and then left them tracking for 4 hours on the same object. they performed almost identically. The LXD75 has 4 ball bearings, 2 on each axis whereas the ASGT has ball bearings on the RA only and bushings on the DEC axis. Does not seem to make any difference since the DEC does very little in tracking. I am going to sell one but can't make up my mind which one so that tells you how similar they are. Here is a picture of the height difference.

Yeah, on the CG-5ASGT and the C6-A SCT, High Point is tough to beat. Doug

I bought one of the C4R closeout setups from High Point and they are very nice people to deal with. Fast shipping and good after sale support which is not always easy to find.

ive been very satisfied with my LXD75, bought it brand spanking new 5 months ago, ive made an adjustment to the gears just to get them to mesh better, i do belive im at its max. weight. during a night of imageing, ive got on it, a Meade 8" SC 2080, 15 lbs of counterweights, Orion 80 Shorttube, DSI, plus wires,
the images ive been getting have been great, tracks very well, its gotten to be very easy to setup, polar align, drift align, and goto its accurate.

I found the biggest difference to be in he handset software.
I find the Celestron FAR more productive. It is much easier to get to most commonly viewed targets.. I have owned both, and to me, the amount of key strokes required for the Meade is just way to much. I like the way the Celestron has shortcut keys to many catalogs, and you don't have to move up and down menus to navigate around nearly as much.
If you are a double star observer, the Celestron makes it MUCH easier to put in coordinates. The LXD is horrible for this. It is easier to DISPLAY coordinates in the Meade, but if you want to enter coordinate after coordinate for a long list of doubles (this is what I do when seeing is perfect.. I hammer out a couple of dozen hard doubles), the Celeatron makes it far easier.
I picked up a used LXD55 a while ago (My second, they are good mounts) when I traded away my CG5 in a big trade, and I miss the excellent handset of the CG5. Too CHEAP to replace it (hence the bargin basement LXD55), but sooner or later, I will either get another CG5 or will move to the Minitower.
Otherwise, these mounts are far more alike to me than different.
But I advise downloading both user manuals and pretend you are doing a regular observing session.. Kind of do a "Walk though" on what it would take to view 10 objects of the kind you typically view in a session. You will find that you do FAR more keystrokes with the Meade, and it is not always easy to remember how to get from where you are to where you want to be.
This though.. The Meade I think does make it easier for someone that doesn't really KNOW what they want to see to find good targets. With the Celestron, I think you need to have a better idea of what kind of targets you want to see. If you are "Clueless" about what you want to point your telescope at, the Meade migth be a better choice.
Also, if you want to track satallites or track the international Space Station, the Meade is GREAT for that sort of stuff.
Regards.

I have both a SkyAlign Celestron setup and a LXD75. My SkyAlign is a alt/az setup. I don't find that much difference in the use, and one big plus for the meade is being able to create your own tours.
The review on AA fails to notice this one thing. Using something like DeepSky to produce a list of targets, you download them to the Autostar and you are off and running for the night - a real benefit.
While the set screw problem affects some LXD's, the ASGT has also a few problems - they kind of equal out. Even if Meade were to tank, I think someone would keep producing the LXD.
I think its just using each one and finding which is the right fit for you (going to a star party and seeing each in action would be a great idea).
All I know at this point, is that the LXD75 works well for me and I know the sky pretty well from 10 years of DSC/Non-DSC work with a CG5. I would get one again.
