IOPTRON Goto Kit and Super Polaris
      #2676821 - 10/02/08 05:59 PM

Anyone try this? Any thoughts on how it would work? I emailed IOPTRON and they said the kit would work on a Super Polaris. I'd like to get one but am being a little cautious as for the price I could get a used CG-5 or LXD75. I do think the Super Polaris is a better mount than either (as far as the gears and stability go). Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I haven't tried it yet. But I've decided to go with a GP2 and the iOptron to get the mount I want. I think it's a no brainer. the Super Polaris is a great mount, and from What I hear, iOptron is a really sweet GOTO. I hear that there are some minor issues with getting the iOptron to fit some older models, but nothing major. If you have any problems, I think Telescopeman54 is the one to seek out. He also sells them. His website is http://www.trapeziumtelescopes.com

hope this helps

I was told by IOPTRON that it would fit the GP but NOT the SP. Also, depending on what version of the SP you have it may or may not have the built in declination motor bracket in the saddle. It is a fabulous and beautiful mount, and if anyone can make it work with their goto it would be Steve.

I have the GP2 with the iOptron kit I've fitted. No regret's at all with it.

I did have to shim the DEC by about 020". Although it will still do the job without the shim.

Nice mount and nice goto IMHO.

Good luck and clear skies.

Thanks for the posts. I'm sure it works with the newer mounts, but I'm really curious if the Super Polaris is new enough. I'd hate to drop $500 for a unit that can't be used. Anyone else know of anyone that tried this? Thanks!

From what I can tell there is no reason why the GotoNova will not fit EITHER of those mounts. Even if it does not fit he still has the opportunity to return it.

Thanks Steve. I guess I'm being cautious since I can't get a solid answer on if this will work. It sounds like it will, but I also don't feel like dealing with making modifications to the mount. I may just stick with a RA drive and hand controller. I don't need a Goto mount, a simple clock drive will be fine for my uses.
