Considering the Sky Assurance program with shipping option. Just wondering if the shipping really is free, and if there are limitations? Do they send good quality boxes, and what is turn-around time for repairs?h

As to the 3-Way Shipping, If you use the service ONCE, it pays for itself. If you happen to need it more than once, then you've saved yourself a LOT of money.
not sure about limitations... When I bought my scope, the dealer was telling me about the sky assurance and basically said that "ANYTHING" that happened to the scope was covered... Even if it was my fault. But you may want to check on this with your own sources...
As for turn-around, that's the one thing I don't know about.

Just remember the 3-way shipping option is extra.

yes, shipping is really free. They send a top-quality box and you pack the scope (w/o accessories) and arrange for a pick up. I am VERY glad I have sky assurance. Turnaround time was, for me, less than a month. The repair time is necessarily variable. They fix the problem, clean the optics, load new firmware and they even gave me a NEW handbox (and I didn't even ask for one).

Thanks for the replies. Anyone know what the ballpark prices are for the 5 year plan w/ shipping on an 8" LX200R?

Let me understand this,
My one year is up in January and am considering SkyAssurance. Iffen the scope is needing work/repair/cleaning/what-have-you, through SkyAssurance MEADE still does the work?

Yes, as it is Meade offering the SkyAssurance warranty in the first place.

Once caveat though...
The sky assurance is considered "PART" of the original warranty, and NOT an extension...
Example: A 1 year warranty with a 3 year sky assurance is good for 3 years from DATE OF SCOPE PURCHASE. NOT from the date of the sky assurance purchase.
So getting the 3 year sky assurance now, at the end of your original warranty will only give you 2 more years of coverage.
Something to consider... You may want to consider getting the 5 year plan.

I just bought my Sky Assurance. It was just under $500 for the 3 year plan plus 3 way shipping. But as mentioned above, this is actually a 2 year plan since it was in conjunction with the first year of the warrenty.
It was sure a great peace of mind when I bought it.

So was mine. But I never used it. Then, I couldn't get the place that was handling the Sky Assurance at that time to give me a price for another extension, so I let it lapse. I'm going on 6 years now, with never a problem to show.
If you use the policy every year (i.e. the thing keeps breaking down), you save money. But if you buy it more than once and don't use it, you lose money (it would have been cheaper to just pay to send it in). So, the question becomes, "Do you feel lucky?"
Also, there's the "lemon clause". If you send it in 3 times for the same thing, Meade can choose to replace it with something that costs the same (not necessarily the same size!). So, if you send in your 12" 3 times, you may end up with a brand new 10" as a replacement.
Just some things to consider.
