Ethos 13mm for a CPC 1100 SCT - wasted?
      #2689475 - 10/09/08 04:03 PM

All this talk of the 13mm Ethos has me wanting to spend some hard earned bucks. I currently have a 13mm Hyperion which is my favorite ep in my CPC1100.

Is buying a $600 ep for a slow F10 SCT a waste of money?

Best way to answer that question is to try one at an astronomy club gathering.

The question you could ask yourself also, would you like better a 13mm or 17mm Ethos (supposed to be coming soon)?

13mm is a good mid range power for a 11" f10 SCT! I am sure the Ethos will give great views in that 11" on globs and other deepsky objects.

I don't have an Ethos for my NS11, but I don't see how it would be wasted. First there is the reported sharpness across the field. Second is the field itself. The only drawback to the SCT design that bothers me is the narrow field. 100 degrees makes medium high power with a decent field of view possible.

For instance. With the 6.3 reducer and the 13 Ethos, you would get a wider field at 135x (.74 degrees) than I get with my beloved and most used ep, a Panoptic 24. With it I get 117x w/0 the FR and just over 1/2 degree. I find that that range of power frames most the the objects I like well.

I have read that the long focal length scopes don't need the higher quality ep's. Not needing them and not showing a difference aren't the same thing. I see a difference in my f10 SCT between premium and good eps.

The last reason that the ep would not be a waste is that you never know what other scopes you might acquire. I started with the NS11 and now own four scopes, two are refractors which love my premium eps. If I ever get the 18 inch dob I crave, my eyepiece kit will fit it well. It might be nice to own an ep that you know will not be replaced. (That said, I too love my Stratus 17.)

Personally, I would not recommend the 13 for an 11 SCT. The 17 would be a pretty decent match IMO. My favorite eyepiece in mine is my 17t4 nagler. The 13 is just too much power.

OTOH, if your 13 hyperion is currently your favorite... maybe your optics are better than mine or maybe you're using a RC. In that case, give it a try.

I liked the 13mm Ethos in my old C11-A SCT - without the FR/FC. Maybe my skies and eyes are a little different.

Yes, it's fairly high power (215x) in that scope, but it still has a reasonable exit pupil, and you cannot beat the FOV at that magnification. It was a great Galaxy Hunter.

I did not subscribe to the theory that you should sell off the 17T4 Nagler when you bought the 13mm Ethos. I think they worked together quite well and I used them both every night.

I love the 13mm Ethos in my CPC 1100. I also tried the 8mm Ethos and found it to be too much magnification. The 13 is very usable, and I still use the 17T4 as well.

The 13mm Ethos in my CPC1100 is absolutely stunning. I certainly do not consider it a waste, just the opposite. It gets used as much or more as any other EP in My EP case.
I might agree that the 8mm Ethos is a little too much magnification on many nights but even it is usable often enough I like having it (although it is used more in my other scopes.)
13mm Ethos in a CPC 1100 is sweet.

I think a lot of it will have to do with your sky conditions. The 13mm works well when conditions permit, however where I observe that's maybe 50% of the time. The rest of the time the seeing just doesn't really support it.

So the question could be - do you mind having a $600+ EP that sits unused in your EP case half the time?

Some poster mentioned the 17mm. That might also be an option.
