Need a list of good deep sky objects! new
      #2690032 - 10/09/08 09:02 PM

Ok well I am heading out to the All Arizona Star Party in a few weeksn and this will be my 16" Dobs first star party. I usually just pick a constellation in my Sky Atlas 2000 and hunt down everything in it. Is there anything that is a must see with a dob this large? Ideas?

There are many lists. But if you want a great list of objects, all of which will appear "interesting" in the eyepiece, here's one of (if not the very best) the best:
http://homepage.mac.com/vicmenard/telescopes/
and download "The List".
I've seen every object on this list except those too far south to see in my neck of the woods, and, uniformly, they are truly special objects. Spectacular.
If you want the complete list to shoot for, go here:
http://www.saguaroastro.org/content/downloads.htm
and download the full catalog. Once you've completed that list, ask me for more. There are even larger lists.

The SAC database has the complete Messier and NGC catalogs along with the best of Barnard, Trumpler, Abell, Sharpless and many others. It contains data on over 10,000 objects. I have been working on it for 30 years, I am almost half done.

Enjoy;

While the SAC database is amazing, it's a bit overwhelming. I myself downloaded the Messier, Caldwell, SAA 100, and Herschel 400 lists, put the data into a chart, fixed dissimilarities, then sorted it by type of object and magnitude (can sort by RA any time I wish) and got rid of duplicates. For my size scope, that becomes "DSOs I have a change of seeing one day"). For a bigger scope, it might be a "list DSOs that look most impressive."
