Is an 8mm Ethos redundant , or almost redundant if A 13mm Ethos is used with a 2.5x powermate in my set up. I have an order on hold for the 8mm and will proceed with the 13mm ethos
I guess I will also be selling some lenses
-------------------- Vixen R130 f/5
powermate 2.5
vixen LVW 5mm ,13mm
Vixen LV 8-24mm zoom
Whats the next lens to complete this set up.please send me a PM if you like

With a 2.5X Powermate and 13mm Ethos = 5.2mm
" " 2X barlow or Powermate = 6.5mm
A 1.6X barlow will yield close to the magnification of the 8mm Ethos.

The 8mm Ethos would only be redundent if you don't need more than 125X. With the short focal lenght of the R130 f/5, even the 8mm Ethos w/2.5 Powermate will give you only a tick over 200X.

Yes, IMHO, for any viewing session where you would take your ethos. However I simply would not risk an Ethos at a public star party, do to concern about damage or theft.
However, the 8mm ep probably fills a needed nitch in your magnifications, and you do not get much money by selling a used plossl anyway, so I would retain the plossl as a spare, and use it for situations where you do not want the Ethos at risk.

ovgjr,
I've definitely got to go with Terrance on that, anytime your doing any public observing and need the 8mm, you don't have to get fingers and eye makeup on your ethos. So definitely not redundant.

Point well taken. I would never take my Ethos to a star party, but let me state that there is something unique about the views of Jupiter and Saturn through the 8 Plossl. Maybe it's the simplicity of the design (less glass?). My friend at the club actually convinced me to get the 8 Plossl specifically for planetary observing. I also have all the T6s but still use the Plossl. By the way, the zooms are quite useful also.

I have two Televue Plossls 8 & 15 and I love them for Planetary Observing. They Barlow very well and you don't really need a huge FOV for Planetary Observing.
The only positive I have found for wide field planetary viewing is that obviously it wont leave the FOV as quickly.
