Sean, typically how much weight will you need to add to your telescope to get it to balance midway? I assume you are refering to the 8" f8 mounted on a pier and CG5 mount?

Roy, my 40mm 68 degree weighs in at 18 oz. and my lightest eyepiece that I would most likely use weighs in at about 2 oz.

The Royce conical mirror is listed as weighing in at 3.25 lbs.

One more thought: I can't remember where I saw it but it seems to me I read that on the Royce conical that you should not have a fan at the rear but only at the sides. Is that correct?

~ Welcome to CloudyNights itslifejim.

Thanks for excel spreadsheet. I can use the Goal Seek function on future projects. A couple of years ago I wrote up a spreadsheet where I would sum the weights for every inch. It was cumbersome to use.

Fortunately for me, Solid Edge was installed on my laptop and it makes "what if's" a lot easier.

I can easily delete the fan at the bottom, no problem. How do you see the fan/s blowing across the mirror? Would you have a exhaust opening across from the fan?

The model reflects a mirror weight of 3.25 lbs. I pulled the weight and dimensions from Royce's site.

Roy

That depends on the eyepiece. About 1# at the end does it for me. Each scope will be different though. I built my own mirror cell and it is very light. I built my own tube and it is comparatively heavy, so my scope is not really representative. I don't have any experience with the protostar tubes, so I hesitate to guess how it will work out for you. Check out some vintage reflector photos and you'll see a sliding weight running parallel to the tube. This counterbalances different eyepieces or should you decide to use a camera. Something like that might be something worth considering...

Roy, I am not sure on the fan. I would like to get some comments from other ATM's who have tried this. I will start a seperate thread on that issue.

Thanks!

Still need the spider and eyepieces. Getting close.

Here are the approximate balance points with this build.
Using the 18 oz eyepiece.

With an aluminum cell for extra weight and your heaviest eyepiece.

That is very helpful Roy! I will give this information to Steve and see if he thinks it will work with one of his mounts.

Just curious as to how much that program of yours costs and if it runs on a PC or Apple?

Hi Jerry,

Solid Edge is a competitor to Solid Works. I think the our company paid around $2800 a little over a year ago. Siemens bought them out since then. The software has functions and features I will never begin to use. Ours runs on a PC, I don't know about Apple.

It's loaded on my laptop, so I can use it for own projects whenever I'm not at work. That's cool.

BTW, I didn't explore into it to deeply, but you may need a spacer for the focuser which can add a little weight. PM me if you decide to build the scope and we can nail down the best size.

Best Regards,

Roy
