I am planning to build my own Newt using a conical mirror. Can anyone who has tried building a solid tube newt with a conical mirror give me the pros and cons of fan and exhaust placement?
Thanks!

Hi Jerry! I built a 12.5" solid-tube newtonian with a Royce conical mirror. I put three 10 cm computer fans on the back, blowing up the tube. Seems to work great, I'm curious to see how well I do when it gets colder at night. The board the fans are on has three velcro patches that stick to three blocks with velcro I glued to my mirror mount.

I built a 8in f6 reflector with Royce conical mirror and Protostar Blacklight tube. The back of the tube is closed with a resin "camping" plate with a hole sawn for a fan blowing up the tube. The back plate is isolated from the tube with a strip of insulation foam and held in place with elastic hair braids. Fan speed controlled with pot. Works great. 8in Royce conical mirror does not have a lot of mass. Reaches ambient temperature very quickly.

Being in the desert I have 30-35 degrees of nightly temperature drop to contend with. I have gone to using a 12" household fan placed behind my scope blowing air into the rear of the mirror box, low setting. Works well, and as you might expect zero issues with vibration.

Jeff,
How have you attached the fan? Did you screw it directly or did you use rubber bands or bushings?

Not attached in any fashion. A normal house fan sitting on the ground about six inches behind the mirror box.

I've resorted to the same thing with my dob in the backyard (where AC current is available) on some nights (tonight would be a nice exception). Lot's of flow.
