Recommended Eyepieces for the C80ED/C100ED/CR6 new
      #2687737 - 10/08/08 06:22 PM

I recently purchased a C80ED, C100ED and CR6 which came with the stock eyepieces.

Time to spend some money on better eyepieces.

What eyepieces would you recommend that would work well with all three refractors?

And who would you recommend as a seller(s)?

Thanks

7mm,9mm,11mm,13mm T6 Naglers
16mm T5 Nagler
24mm Panoptic
32TV Plössl

Before anyone mentions "dupe TFOV", because the 32TV Plössl and 24 Pan are so close in TFOV, I'll mention different Exit Pupils. The Plössl show 33% more exit pupil.

You may want a 31 Nagler or 35 Pan later on, but this is a sizeable collection building project, so keeping to the more affordable 1¼" eyepieces to start will help your wallet survive. Furthermore, the Grenades are really nice, but before purchasing them, one must remember how expensive, bulky and heavy these are and think really long and hard.

I dunno. You've got focal lengths from 500mm(?) to 1200mm so any particular EP is going to have quite a bit different magnification as it moves between scopes.

You don't mention a budget for your EPs, so I'll suggest a less expensive option than Seb. Check out Baader Hyperions from www.alpineastro.com, www.agenaastro.com or even www.optcorp.com. Bob at Alpine is the Baader distributor in the US, and a great guy. He'd be my first choice.

Now, these eyepieces are not in the same league as Seb suggested. But, for most folks I think they are a reasonable choice to get most, most--not all, of the high priced performance in a longer focal length refractor like the C6.

For example, 8mm, 13mm, 17mm & 24mm will set you back a bit less than $500 and would be a reasonable place to start. I've used these particular focal lengths in a C6 and 120mm Omni XLT, as well as a 550mm 80mm refractor to good effect.
If you can afford a bit more, the 31mm Baader Hyperion Aspheric gives--to me--pleasing views, too.

General purpose, reasonable wide field, reasonably forgiving in longer focal length scopes. I'm not someone who is an expert by any means, but I've enjoyed mine.
