You guys are gonna think I've gone nuts!
      #269450 - 12/02/04 11:05 AM

I just purchased a WO Megrez-II 80mm ED Triple APO, and I don't even have all the parts yet. Bad, since last night was probably the best viewing night we'll see in central NC all winter.

Anyway, I noticed all the good web shopping place sare putting their Meade LX90 UHTCs on sale for $500 off, and man do I want to pull out the plastic and git me one!!

I'm thinking, while the LX90 is cooling down I can already be seeing stuff with my Megrez, and what with the GoTo and all, I'll be able to find things easier.

Am I crazy, or would that scope be a fine compliment to my wonderful, little refractor? Anyone have experience with the LX90? I did a search, but didn't find many posts here about it.

The LX90 is a fine visual instrument, and, at $500 off, is a bargain.
The 2 scopes complement each other nicely--no reason to get a focal reducer for the LX90 to get wide fields the 80mm is capable of. And you'd have the light gathering when you need it. At a dark site, well over 10,000 DSO's are visible in an 8", so the question is, why haven't you already done it?
[I owned an 8" LX200 for 11 years, and it was a fine scope. The GoTo from Meade is as accurate as any commercial scope. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I. Were I to do it today, I'd get the LX90, because the LX200 features are more important to photography than visual use.]

I don't think that's nuts at all. The small scope/big scope combo is a powerhouse punch. At $500 off, go for it if you can!

BTW, we usually say it's the little refractor that compliments the big cat. It keeps the SRFs at bay!

I just got a "Can't you at least wait until after Christmas?" from the wife. Oh man, that is awfully close to a yes!!!

This is precisely the reason I bought the Vixen refractor. A little something to piddle around with while I wait for my MakNewt to cool, at least in theory.

You got the right idea. A nice little refractor really compliments the SCT. When I saw the LX90 special over on the Skies Unlimited web site, I thought that was a great deal. I understand that they are in limited quantities, so if you're going to move on one, better get at it. If I didn't already have a couple of SCT's, I'd be considering the deal. Then for next Christmas.......a binoviewer!
