Doppelmayer, as befits the name, is not a single crater but rather a complex of ancient, overlapping impacts. Situated at the south end of Mare Humorum, it includes arcs of old crater walls that lie partially submerged in the lava plain.
My lunar map is not very detailed, so I don't know where one feature ends and the next one begins - the crater on the left is not identified, so I'm assuming it is part of Doppelmayer. The central peak is surrounded by a curious double ring; I don't think it is really as large as I drew it.

Tom,
Most impressive, I have never noticed the double ring around the central peak but I will have a look for myself at the next opportunity. I made a graphite sketch of these craters in early November of last year but I like your sketch much better.

Thanks Frank - the rings I noticed may be one of those features that only pop out under certain lighting conditions. I'll take another look tonight, though I'll be sketching elsewhere.
