I was watching the ISS go over my house the other day when it suddenly disapeared. There was no clouds in the sky. It disappeared almost right in front of a star. How is this possible?

Hi Kyle,
Welcome to Cloudy Nights. The ISS will disappear from your sight when it enters the Earth's shadow just the same as any other artificial satellite will.

Ditto. Ted hit the nail on the head. Or maybe the crew turned on the cloaking device.

You may see the reverse sometimes, too. I've been looking at a bit of sky when a satellite entered sunlight, and it appeared the satellite just suddently winked into existence. --Wayne

Catching a satellite while observing through a telescope something is quite something to.
about a month ago, about 9 or 9:30 I was looking at M57 and it just cut right through my FOV. I of course made failed attempts to follow it, that lasted about 2 seconds.
But it was pretty cool.

The Ceylons stole it...
Seriously, it moved into the shadow of earth. Happens a lot. When you live out here in the mountain states, sometimes it'll wink in and out a couple of times before it's gone. Sometimes if you're tracking with large binoculars, you can actually see it for a while after it's no longer visible naked eye. Not sure what the source of illumination is - except perhaps diffused light from high clouds...
