I kind of secured the sale about a week ago, and spoke with him on the phone for awhile. He is supposed to be shipping it to me, but I have not heard from him in a few days. I plan to call him again tomorrow, but I don't know if his intentions are to sell it to me, although he indicated to me that I could consider it mine. Perhaps he sold it locally or something, but I hope to know tomorrow. Rich

Rich,

Hmmm, may explain why the seller never returns my emails! My disappointment is partially relieved thinking this will soon be in the hands of another hopeless scope junkie! What is the brand and model number?

Boy that looks almost like the one Rich posted. Of course it is not but now I would ask if they were made by the same company way back when.

I once owned a "Research Optical" vintage binocular (briefly) and the optical quality was sub-par. But I'm not sure if it was the same vendor that imported this scope, or if my old binocular had been abused in the past. So take this with a grain of salt.

Meade smooth sided plossl Borderline classic??? but they aren't made anymore and are VERY collectable. This is a good price, i would grab it but i already have two in perfect condition. If i had a 3rd eye i would buy it now. A good performance eyepiece. .(i don't know seller)

While browsing the Craigslist advertisements for the New Hampshire Craigslist, I happened to notice a listing for a vintage (1960s) Optical Craftsmen 4.25-inch RFT (rich field telescope). The ad was posted on October 13, 2008, and the listing number is:

http://nh.craigslist.org/sys/878245869.html
(I am not the seller of the telescope.)

To my knowledge these are as scarce as hen's teeth.

I think I have one of those in a box, SOMEWHERE in my pile of STUFF! I'll need to go looking around and see if I still have it.

Hi Rich,

You know you can always P.M. me. I'm here for you, man So I'm thinking your Tucson Tasco deal has gone south (scope in a box)... Or on Thursday there was a Unitron 114 (1960's) complete with "additional hardware", which was a unihex on the Seattle craigslist for $150!! I didn't see the ad until 6 hours after posting and of course by then the scope was long gone. Did ya snag that one as well? Did anyone here manage to score the Unitron? A lurker out there perhaps?

Mike:

I agree that it just doesn't look right. If I am wrong, so be it. I just think that thing is way TOO perfect!

There is NO SIGN of ANY petina on ANY of the brass. There IS a bit of dirt in a few places, but, it's not OLD DIRT. There are no score marks on the screw heads and no sign of any dirt or "stuff" collected in the rope scrolls on the flanges. If this thing was cleaned it was done in a chemical bath or an ultra-sonic cleaner. Did anyone notice that there are PHILLIPS SCREWS holding the finder brackets to the tube? They may have been replaced but, if one were to want it to remain original, then those are not correct. Why is the counter balance on the wrong side of the mount fork? Last, the wooden legs look as if they were just made. There is no depth to the petina of the wood which one would expect if they had not just been completely refinished or freshly made.

Nope, all of the alarm bells are going off on this one! Unless some really good documentation can be presented on this one, I'd steer VERY clear of it!!

Take a look at this on the E-vilbay. It looks like it is in really nice shape, i just don't like the way it is stowed away in the box with no braces. At least it has a lens cover even though it resembles Tupperware. Shipping is a killer for me(opp side of the States)so my bid is low. If anyone lives close or even a pick up this would be a little find.

Plus here is a Sears for bid.

Hi Keith:
I believe that the deal on the Tasco is still ok. I sent payment for it but I haven't seen it yet. I did however snag the Ultimate deal over the weekend. I had to go to Denver to get it. Listed on craigslist was an original orange tube C8. The ad was for the scope, with 7 extra lenses, a group of filters, and a cold camera. Imagine my surprise when I arrived to find a complete set of Vernonscope Brandon (32mm, 24mm, 16mm, 12mm, and 8mm) lenses in original case with the 2X and 3X Vernonscope Dakin Barlows. Also in the case was a full set of 14 filters in their small leather holder case, all Vernonscope as well, and a Vernonscope polarizing lens in its leather case. Each of the eyepieces has its own metal case that it fits into. There was also a cold camera, as well as another Celestron eyepiece and a few other accessories. I think it was a much better deal than the Unitron that I didn't even see. I have attached a photo of the whole package. Its very nice. Rich
